#11 Know Your World: Ancestry in America

โ–ถ๏ธ America is a melting pot (=metaphor of a pot in which different people become one and the same) โ€“ or is it a salad bowl (=metaphor of a bowl in which different people remain different but are part of the same)? Anyway, when you ask people where their grandparents, great-grandparents and also their family name came from they can actually tell you. Check out where most of them came from!

#74 Afandi Quiz: Whatโ€™s the word?

Someone is seriously in a hurry there.

๐Ÿ‘‰@afandi_english๐Ÿ‘ˆ #word_quiz
Afandi English
The man is running โ€ฆ
Not bad!

๐Ÿ‘ The man is running hastily. He pushes other people away. Hasty means quick and in a careless way.

๐Ÿ‘Ž The word fastly doesnโ€™t exist โ€“ the adverb of fast is also fast. Speedy has the right meaning but doesnโ€™t collocate (=make a word combination) with running. Breakneck is a noun and goes together with speed, i.e. something happens at breakneck speed. Hurrily doesnโ€™t exist โ€“ only hurriedly does. Thereโ€™s also no such word as gallopy, only gallop which describes a running horse. Run high exists but it means that something is too much, especially feelings.
#111 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
Menga maslahat bera olasizmi?

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
Can you give advice for me?

โœ… Well, it should be:
Can you give me some advice?

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ This sentence definitely sounds better with some.

โ—๏ธ Use me as an indirect object.

โ—๏ธ There is no reason why you should use for here. It doesnโ€™t go with give. You donโ€™t give something for someone but you give something to someone.

#29 Movie Time: Wallace and Gromit (2005)

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s movie is a ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง British cartoon that's all about Wallace, a quirky (=strange but genius, esp. professors) inventor, and his dog Gromit. Check out how they try to save precious vegetables from being eaten by rabbits!

#74 Travelogue UK: China Town

London has attracted immigrants from all corners of the globe. 35% of people living there were born outside the UK and only 44% identify as White British.

Foreigners all have their communities and we find them in different parts of the city. Letโ€™s do a quick case study of the Chinese community:

Nationality
Chinese people from the communist Mainland are very different from those that come from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asia. Nationality divides them more than it unites them.

Language & Culture
Shared language, food, holidays โ€“ these are the things that really unite Chinese people. Despite all local differences they still have a lot in common: Chinese characters, chopsticks, Chinese New Year, etc.

Religion
Thereโ€™s little common ground between Mainlanders and the others. Most Mainlanders are not religious at all.

Conclusion: The Chinese community of London is an ethno-linguistic one.
