#70 Afandi Quiz: Mysterious song

Today’s quiz is about a mysterious song from a mysterious country! Can you guess where it’s from? Pay attention to the language and style.

This song is from ...
Ouch!

πŸ‘Ž Unfortunately this song is not from πŸ‡»πŸ‡³Vietnam although that’s a pretty good guess. πŸ‡§πŸ‡©Bangladesh was wrong because it should have sounded more like Indian music then. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³China was also wrong, by the sound of the language more than the style though.

πŸ‘ πŸ‡°πŸ‡Cambodia was the right answer. The language of Cambodia is called Khmer and sounds harder than Vietnamese to which it is related.

#107 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▢️ Please translate the following sentence:
Biznes markazda kostyum shim kiyishiz kerak.

❌ Perhaps you think it is:
At the business centre you should wear a costume.

βœ… Well, it should be:
At the office you should wear a suit.

❓Why?

❗️ The word business centre is a pseudo-anglicism – a word that seems to be English but isn’t actually used in English-speaking countries. If you want to refer to the building you can say office building.

❗️ A costume is a special set of clothes that actors wear, or you may wear a zombie costume on a Halloween party. It has nothing to do with formal clothes. The word is an example for a false friend – a word that seems easy to translate but means something different.

#72 Travelogue Germany: Weird products

People lack very little in an advanced economy like Germany but, damn, they don’t know that! They need all kinds of peculiar products. Let’s take a look at some:

Stamped vegetables
Save the planet? Don’t use labels then, plastic or paper, all bad.

Covid soft toys
You feel that covid is so much more than just a virus and the vaccine is really THE vaccine? Cuddle up to these little life changers.

Rainbow hand cream
Can’t get proud enough of LGBT? Celebrate every day with a specially themed hand cream.

Flood bread
Do something good for flood victims, your local bakery and yourself all at once? That’s well worth a few extra pennies.

Cheese melting dome
You’re upset that your cheese on the grill refuses to melt while the meat under it gets burnt? Get yourself some professional gear.

Dog poop bags
Wanna walk your dog like a pro? Get a roll of dog poop bags in a cute little container.
