#5 Know Your World: If the world were 100 people

โ–ถ๏ธ The world is unfair because people are unequal. We all know that. But itโ€™s good to remind yourself of this reality sometimes, and visualisations like this infographic and video are really good for that.

โ—๏ธHereโ€™s an updated but less amazingly animated video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXykDFy9HhQ

#66 Afandi Quiz: Who said it?

๐Ÿ†• In this new type of quiz you have to guess whose quote (=sth that sb said) the sentence below is.

โ–ถ๏ธ โ€œYou know Iโ€™m automatically attracted to beautiful โ€“ I start kissing them. Itโ€™s like a magnet. Just kiss. I donโ€™t even wait. And when youโ€™re a star they let you do it. You can do anything.โ€

Which president said it?
Tremendous! (=great, very big; Trumpโ€™s favourite word)

๐Ÿ‘ Of course it was the one and only Donald Trump who could say something as awful as this. Mind you (=telling you not to generalise or conclude anything because of some important detail) though, he said that 10 years before he became president.
#30 Tongue twister: Switching watches

โ—๏ธChallenge yourself with this tongue twister:

โ–ถ๏ธ Robert watched Richard switch his Irish wristwatch for a Swiss wristwatch.

Translation:
Robert Richardning Irlandiyalik qo'l soatini Shveytsariya qo'l soatiga almashtirishini tomosha qildi.

โ—๏ธPay attention to:

๐Ÿ”˜ Fluency and accuracy: Tongue twisters force you to pay more attention to correct pronunciation, while at the same time trying to speak fast. Keep practicing them until your both fluent and accurate, itโ€™ll benefit your speaking skill!

#103 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentences:
Mening akam chet elda ishlayapti. Men ham chet elga bormoqchiman.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
My brother is working in abroad. I also want to go to abroad.

โœ… Well, it should be:
My brother is working in abroad. I also want to go to abroad.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ The word abroad is an adverb and doesnโ€™t need a preposition, just like home.

โ—๏ธ The only exception to this rule is from โ€“ you can come from abroad or from home.

๐Ÿ“Š English Level: Intermediate

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles: Automatic

๐Ÿ’ฌ Topics: Comedy

๐Ÿ’ก Content: Hereโ€™s a wacky (=crazy in a funny way) channel thatโ€™s all about putting stuff in a super high-powered blender (=machine in the kitchen to cut and mix things). Check out how this guy manages to blend just about anything (=pretty much anything)!

#24 Movie Time: The Triplets of Belleville (2003)

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s movie is a rather arty (=artistic, full of art) cartoon from ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทFrance that has hardly any language in it. Itโ€™s the story of a professional cyclist who gets kidnapped by an evil betting (=playing with money about sports events) wine mafia in a surreal (=unreal, like in a dream) French version of New York. Check out how a cool gang led by his mother comes to his rescue (=saves him).

#68 Travelogue Germany: East vs West

On my last visit to Berlin I saw the new city castle, and thatโ€™s a pretty nice little case study of German history in one spot. Itโ€™s also quite controversial.

The war
The castle was part of Berlinโ€™s impressive cityscape. Sadly, much of it was destroyed in the war and the new communist government of East Germany decided to demolish it.

East Germany
A new โ€œPalace of the Republicโ€ was built in the castleโ€™s place. The ugly rectangular building housed the East German parliament.

Reunification
The Palace of the Republic was found to contain poisonous asbestos and rich West Berliners wanted the castle back. Despite protests from Easterners the โ€˜Palaceโ€™ was knocked down and a modern version of the castle was built.

Was it right to erase East German history to build a beautiful but somehow ahistorical castle?
