#67 Travelogue UK: Inside UK houses

Old nations have their own standards in everything, even about small things in the house. Let’s take a closer look at what makes a house really British inside:

Fire doors
Buildings often have fire doors in them – heavy wooden doors without handle that you push open and, heavy as they are, they shut themselves. This is to prevent fire from spreading.

Windows
In older houses you don’t open a window by pulling a handle but you slide it up actually.

Bathrooms
First of all they usually have a carpet, so you shouldn’t splash too much water around. The light is switched on and off by pulling a string.

Toilets
You flush a toilet by pushing down a handle. Little pressure releases little water, a hard push the whole tank.

Sinks
Hot and cold water are provided separately, from two different taps.

Plugs
The UK plug has 3 pins, not 2. The third pin is long and helps stabilise the plug in the socket.

#5 Know Your World: If the world were 100 people

▶️ The world is unfair because people are unequal. We all know that. But it’s good to remind yourself of this reality sometimes, and visualisations like this infographic and video are really good for that.

❗️Here’s an updated but less amazingly animated video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXykDFy9HhQ

#66 Afandi Quiz: Who said it?

🆕 In this new type of quiz you have to guess whose quote (=sth that sb said) the sentence below is.

▶️ “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful – I start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything.”

Which president said it?
Tremendous! (=great, very big; Trump’s favourite word)

👍 Of course it was the one and only Donald Trump who could say something as awful as this. Mind you (=telling you not to generalise or conclude anything because of some important detail) though, he said that 10 years before he became president.

#103 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▶️ Please translate the following sentences:
Mening akam chet elda ishlayapti. Men ham chet elga bormoqchiman.

Perhaps you think it is:
My brother is working in abroad. I also want to go to abroad.

Well, it should be:
My brother is working in abroad. I also want to go to abroad.

Why?

❗️ The word abroad is an adverb and doesn’t need a preposition, just like home.

❗️ The only exception to this rule is from – you can come from abroad or from home.

#24 Movie Time: The Triplets of Belleville (2003)

▶️ Today’s movie is a rather arty (=artistic, full of art) cartoon from 🇫🇷France that has hardly any language in it. It’s the story of a professional cyclist who gets kidnapped by an evil betting (=playing with money about sports events) wine mafia in a surreal (=unreal, like in a dream) French version of New York. Check out how a cool gang led by his mother comes to his rescue (=saves him).

#68 Travelogue Germany: East vs West

On my last visit to Berlin I saw the new city castle, and that’s a pretty nice little case study of German history in one spot. It’s also quite controversial.

The war
The castle was part of Berlin’s impressive cityscape. Sadly, much of it was destroyed in the war and the new communist government of East Germany decided to demolish it.

East Germany
A new “Palace of the Republic” was built in the castle’s place. The ugly rectangular building housed the East German parliament.

Reunification
The Palace of the Republic was found to contain poisonous asbestos and rich West Berliners wanted the castle back. Despite protests from Easterners the ‘Palace’ was knocked down and a modern version of the castle was built.

Was it right to erase East German history to build a beautiful but somehow ahistorical castle?
