#101 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar & Vocabulary

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Hatto qishloqlarda ham bankomatlar bor.

Perhaps you think it is:
Even there are bancomats also in villages.

Well, it should be:
There are cash machines / ATMs even in villages.

Why?

❗️ Some students think that the word even should always come in the beginning of a phrase. That is only true for even if and even though, but not for even.

❗️ Even doesn’t need also in English.

❗️ Bancomat sounds international but isn’t English actually. In British English it’s cash machine while Americans tend to say ATM, which stands for “Automatic Teller Machine”.

#1 Future: Facial Recognition

🆕 Anticipate (=expect and be ready for sth) the future with Afandi English. The world is changing rapidly – damn you if you sleepwalk (=walk while sleeping, getting into a bad situation because you don’t pay attention) into the future and don’t secure your place!

▶️ Today’s video is about the technology behind facial recognition (=finding a person by their face) and how it may change our lives. Switch on the subtitles for better understanding!

#22 Movie Time: When Pigs Have Wings (2011)

▶️ Today’s movie is a 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇧🇪French-German-Belgian co-production. It’s a comedy set in Gaza, one of the Palestinian areas controlled by Israel. It’s about a poor fisherman who happens to (=coincidental, by chance, unplanned) fish a pig swimming in the sea. Watch how this amusing story unfolds (=develops, happens)!

❗️ The movie is in Arabic, Hebrew (=the language of Israel) and English. It has English subtitles. Subtitles are an excellent way of pushing you speed up your reading and stop the stupid habit of reading out loud! 😉

#66 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Shop till you drop

If you thought Navruz was in spring you’re only half right. It’s actually all year round now at Andijan’s brand new shopping complex in Dubai-ish architecture. What’s there to explore?

Festive vibes
New Year? Christmas? The songs sound a lot like it’s Christmas but the big illuminated “2022” outside tells us it’s New Year. The big tree and the old man could both be Santa Claus and Father Frost. Whatever it is, let’s celebrate as it gives us a reason to consume!

Food court
The corporate approach to dining has finally conquered Andijan. That means added value through branding and exciting displays, engineered portions and flavours, standardised procedures and replaceable staff as well as maximum profits through minimising cost by the gram of each ingredient.

At Navruz you can feel international and Uzbeks totally love that. But I hope “KFC” will always just mean “fried chicken”, not the actual fast food chain.

#78 Spot Something: Kango qani endi?

Can you spot chewing gum of the “Kango” brand in this picture? I hate to do unpaid advertising but couldn’t resist taking this photo!

❗️If you can you might win 5,000 Paynet-soums! Mark the picture and send it to @jochenho. You have half an hour.

❗️ The time limit is 30 minutes.

#4 Know Your World: Ugly but true

▶️ Did you know that maps always lie to us? Since the Earth is a globe we simply cannot have a map that shows us both true sizes and true shapes. It is often argued that the poor countries in the tropics look too small on maps and the Europe, Russia, Greenland and North America too big.

❗️Here’s an alternative projection of the world map – the so-called Gall-Peters Projection. It is true to size, not shape, and looks strangely squeezed (=made small) and stretched (=made long).

Why should we care?

❗️Maps shape the way we see the world. Look how big Africa is on this map. And that’s the true size of it.

Well done!

👍 Malaysia was indeed the correct answer. You can tell by the colonial architecture, the modern skyscrapers (=very tall buildings), the tropical vegetation (=all the plants in one area) and the Islamic star, or octagram (=having 8 corners), on the pavement (=place for pedestrians to walk).

👎 Bangladesh is Islamic and tropical but not developed enough to have so many skyscrapers in one place. The United Arab Emirates are more modern with hardly any (=almost none) colonial buildings left. Meanwhile, Mexico is not a Muslim country.
