#45 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Uzbekistan Airways
Most Uzbeks aren’t that proud of their national airline. I do agree that the logo sucks but I was pleasantly surprised by two things:
Pricing
To become more competitive, the government has lowered either airport fees or taxes, or both, I don’t know, but ticket prices have come down a bit. Flying to and from Tashkent used to be much more expensive than Bishkek or Almaty. In the future Tashkent airport could become a hub.
Safety Video
It is international standard to play a video that explains passengers how to stay safe. These videos can be really boring but not the one on Uzbekistan Airways flights. They shot a Silk-Road-themed video with people in historic outfits dealing with stuff like seat belts and oxygen masks. Definitely worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7s17LVn1JE
---Vocab---
📍sth sucks = sth is really bad 📍hub = central point 📍outfit = a set of clothes

#16 Featured article: A second human nature
📍 Today’s article is from a book by Mike Spencer Bown, the world’s most travelled man (according to himself). He describes his experience of complete solitude (=being alone) in the wilderness (=nature). He argues that we all have a second nature but we never know about it unless we go out into the wild.

Take a look at the article and then debate with your fellow subscribers in the Afandi English Chat.
The debate question is: The best thing to experience when travelling is CULTURE / NATURE.
If your birthday is between 1 January and 30 June you say CULTURE.
If your birthday is between 1 July and 31 December you say NATURE.
Do not debate with your real opinion and don’t get personal, this is just an exercise!

#25 Tongue twister: Thoughts
❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister:
▶️ I thought a thought. But the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I thought. If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I wouldn't have thought so much.
Translation:
Men bir fikr o‘yladim. Ammo, men o‘ylagan fikr men o‘ylagan fikr emasmikin deb o‘yladim. Agar men o‘ylagan fikrimni o‘ylaganim men o‘ylagan fikrim bo‘lganda edi, men bu qadar ko‘p o‘ylamagan bo‘lar edim.
❗️Pay attention to:
🔘 Intonation – strong / weak: Without intonation no one can understand the meaning of this tongue twister.
▶️ Now practice: I thought a thought. But the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I thought. If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I wouldn't have thought so much.

#80 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar & Vocab
▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Ertaga qaytaman.
❌ Perhaps you think it is:
I will back tomorrow.
✅ Well, it should be:
I will go / be back tomorrow. (informal)
I will return tomorrow. (formal)
❓Why?
❗️ Back cannot be used as a verb here, you still need to use go or come. In a formal situation you can use return.
❗️ There is a verb back sb/sth but that is formal and means support sb/sth, e.g. Some politicians do not back the new law.

#46 Travelogue Germany: Psychomarkets
When you go to the outdoor market you buy what you need, but when you go to a supermarket you somehow always buy more than you actually need. What’s going on there?
It's psychology. Here’s what German supermarkets do:
Braking zone
People want to save time. Some supermarkets put messy shelves full of special offers right at the entrance to slow customers down and make them forget what they wanted to buy.
Eye-level displays
People are lazy. They don’t want to stretch or bow down to the ground. As you can see, the products placed on our eye-level are more expensive.
Keep right
People usually keep right, not only when driving but also when walking. Most supermarkets make you move towards the checkout in an anti-clockwise direction so you need more time to find your way out.
They have more tricks, read about them here.
---Vocab---
📍stretch = make your arms/legs long 📍checkout = where you pay
