#41 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Today’s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

▶️ Anna from 🇷🇺Russia and Jesse from 🇧🇪Belgium are a young couple travelling in 🇺🇿Uzbekistan. As travel vloggers they are excited to see the countryside where they were invited to an Uzbek wedding. The following day as they wait for a Damas to take them back to the city they are sitting together looking through their photos when suddenly they are approached by an angry young man.

What could the young man be angry about?
Piece of cake!

👍 It was indeed about the closeness between boy and girl. Gender separation (=separating men and women) is strictly enforced (=make people follow a rule) in rural Uzbekistan and it is taboo (=unacceptable) to display (=show) affection (=liking, loving) for each other as a couple.

👎 Uzbeks don’t usually mind people taking photos, unless it’s of tunnels or bridges (some Cold War / Soviet taboo perhaps?). It’s also not a big deal if a foreigner goes to an Uzbek wedding empty-handed as Uzbeks are very forgiving and don’t expect foreigners to know about Uzbek traditions. And finally, stepping onto someone’s private property doesn’t freak anyone out (=doesn’t make anyone very angry) in Uzbekistan.
#77 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Siz shunchalik yaxshi do’stsiz.

Perhaps you think it is:
You’re so good friend.

Well, it should be:
You’re such a good friend.

Why?

❗️ When it’s so + adjective and you want to add a noun it changes to such a + adjective + noun.

#21 It’s a strange world: Not In My Back Yard

A new shopping mall, a new prison, a new railway line, a new military base, a new power plant, a new airport – all good and necessary, you will probably say. But what if any of this is built right where you live?

❗️ Local residents often protest against such projects and politicians, planners and businesses have a hard time (=find it difficult) convincing them. The term “NIMBY” is an acronym (=a word creation in which each letter stands for one word) for “Not In My Back Yard” and is used to dismiss (=refuse sb’s idea or opinion) local opposition (=being against) against large construction projects.
