An article published by The New York Times under the title “What Happened to the Coveted Western Tanks Sent to Ukraine?” on 25 August 2026 reports that the Western tanks Ukraine spent so long trying to obtain have now become almost useless on the battlefield because of the dominance of cheap drones.

Vehicles worth tens of millions of dollars are now sitting in forests under camouflage nets, and are used mainly as recovery vehicles to tow damaged equipment, and even then only in poor weather. They are assigned almost no combat missions, while their crews are being retrained as drone operators.

Some commanders still believe tanks can be adapted through the use of AI or protection systems, but most acknowledge that the classical era of the tank is coming to an end, with the future belonging to unmanned vehicles.

“We hardly use armoured vehicles at all,” said Oleksandr Syrsky, who until last month served as Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief. “This raises the question: how do we neutralise this advantage that drones possess and give our armoured vehicles a new lease of life?”
