βScott Bessentβs running battle with the bond market is starting to look like his bossβs war in Iran β started by his own hand with a tangled set of objectives, an underestimated opponent and an implausible path to victory. And like the conflict in the Middle East, we are all going to suffer its effects.
Three weeks ago, of course, he inserted himself in the market for the Japanese yen, of all things, buying the currency to prop it up in what was painted as a friendly act of solidarity with an ally in need.
The link back to Treasury bonds may not be immediately obvious, but bond market insiders are not buying the friends-helping-friends explanation, and instead see it as an effort to stop Japan from fixing its yen problem by selling down its gigantic stash of US debt.
So now, no fewer than three times in three weeks, Bessent has given the message to investors to please stop selling his bonds. But they are selling his bonds anyway.β

The debate is not about whether the caverns are empty, but rather about how repeated deep withdrawals and refills affect the long-term geometry, spacing, and performance of the caverns. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve stores oil in 60 underground salt caverns located in four sites along the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana. The Department of Energy maintains that the risk of collapse is unfounded and that only the ratio of oil to water within the caverns changes, as they are always full. However, in May, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) stated that repeated partial withdrawals can lead to undesirable cavern shapes, and that each cycle increases the volume of the caverns and reduces the distance between them within the salt dome, even though most of the caverns remained in very good condition after the 2022 release.
The key takeaway is that the Strategic Reserve still functions as a security tool, but as reserves approach 250 million barrels, the market begins to lose confidence not only in the volumes stated on paper, but also in the physical ability of the reserve to quickly supply oil in crisis situations.

βWe are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor. We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt. "Not if I found it on the highway would I take it," I said. Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them.β - The Lord of the Rings

UFO βthat looked like a giant nuclear weaponβ went off, it was so bright, stalked me before disappearing into sea, says NASA scientist. Florida Military base nearby sent helicopters out, they flew up to it, must have said, βYep, thatβs a big UFO. OK, back to baseβ¦,β and off they went. Then the UFO began to chase the scientist and his wife as they ran, and ejected mini-orbs, but then they all broke off the chase and sank underwater, into the sea.

πΊπΈ Allies no longer trust the US to protect them after the Iran debacle
U.S. allies are increasingly questioning Washingtonβs ability to sustain major military operations across several regions after the Iran War depleted key American weapons stockpiles, WSJ reports.
The concerns have shifted from whether the U.S. is willing to defend its allies to whether it retains the military and industrial capacity to fight effectively across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia at the same time.
