A rare bookseller suspected his books were being bought by AI companies. He stuck an AirTag in a book and we tracked it to a secretive Amazon facility in Las Vegas where they scan and destroy books called VGT3:

Amazon is buying massive quantities of books, scanning them for AI training data, and destroying them in the process.

A 404 Media investigation was able to reveal Amazonโ€™s book buying operation, which hasnโ€™t been previously reported, by placing a tracking device in a rare book we suspected would be acquired by an AI company for training data, and following it around the country to its final destination.

That final destination was an Amazon warehouse in Las Vegas, Nevada. Amazon employees who work at this location say all they do is receive massive shipments of printed books which they then cut the bindings off in order to scan the books more quickly. The printed book is destroyed in the process. The logo of the Amazon team that works at this warehouse, called VGT3, is a dinosaur, brandishing its teeth and with a book in its hands.

โ€œAmazon purchases books through commercial channels to help develop and improve the products and services our customers use,โ€ an Amazon spokesperson told me in a statement.

The worldโ€™s AI companies are constantly looking for, and spending extreme resources to locate, more material to train their AI models. With books, that sometimes means destroying them in the process, something that large parts of the public have spoken up against, and which we can now confirm Amazon is doing.

Video, slides, and transcript for my recent IEEE Keynote address.
This talk presents the central thesis of the Fields & Energy Project: electromagnetism is not best understood as the action of a single entity, the photon, endowed with the mutually contradictory properties of localized particle and non-localized wave. Instead, electromagnetic phenomena emerge from the interaction of two distinct elements: spatially extended fields that behave as waves, and energy that, in the quantum limit, is transferred in discrete amounts. Fields guide energy.

Through examples drawn from fields and their interactions, antenna theory, and atomic emission and absorption, this talk demonstrates how the fields-and-energy model provides a conceptually coherent and technically productive framework. This perspective clarifies long-standing puzzles associated with radiation reaction and wave-particle duality and connects Maxwellian theory, quantum emission and absorption, and engineering practice within a unified narrative.

The broader aim is to recover conceptual clarity in the foundations of physics, to reestablish continuity between classical and quantum descriptions, and to examine the historical and philosophical developments that shaped modern interpretations. By restoring a disciplined distinction between fields and energy, the talk argues for a simpler and more intelligible account of electromagnetic processes โ€” one capable of unifying principles across physics and engineering.

BREAKING: ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ช The US is confiscating Venezuelaโ€™s gold from the UK bank

All of Venezuela's gold reserves, totaling 31 tons, which are held at the Bank of England, will be transferred to the United States, per EL Nacional.

The value amounts to $4 billion, resulting in the loss of Venezuelan sovereignty over the resources.

Neil Oliver describes world leaders as irrelevant puppets controlled by faceless elites operating behind the scenes.

He argues that maintaining a permanent state of anxiety among the publicโ€”through higher taxes and engineered social conflictโ€”is a deliberate tactic to facilitate manipulation, division and control.

๐Ÿคก Russia threatens the UK with โ€œserious consequencesโ€ for supplying drones to Ukraine

The Russian Embassy in London said that the use of these UAVs to strike targets deep inside Russia indicates Londonโ€™s desire to โ€œescalate the war.โ€

Russian diplomats accused the British authorities of facilitating Ukrainian strikes and said that Britain โ€œwill bear responsibilityโ€ for its continued support for Ukraine.

They also warned that the more active Londonโ€™s military assistance is, โ€œthe more serious the consequences will be for it.โ€

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Myanmarโ€™s Min Aung Hlaing seeks closer ties with Putin

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing is due to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin later on August 18, on his first visit to Moscow since taking office in April following a widely criticised election.

According to The Business Times, the Kremlin said the two leaders will discuss closer co-operation and regional and international issues, with several agreements expected to be signed. Myanmarโ€™s President Office said the talks will cover the economy, security and social affairs.

Russia is one of the few major countries to have maintained close ties with Myanmarโ€™s military rulers since the 2021 coup. Much of the West has instead isolated the government.

The relationship spans nuclear technology and defence. Myanmar is working with Russiaโ€™s Rosatom State Corporation to build a small nuclear power plant. The project is intended as an initial step towards using nuclear technology in health, agriculture and industry.

Russia has also been a major supplier of advanced weapons to Myanmarโ€™s military. It supplied more than $400mn worth of weapons after the coup, according to a United Nations report published in May 2023.

The Moscow meeting is the latest in a series of overseas visits by Min Aung Hlaing as he seeks greater acceptance for his government following the disputed election.

He has now travelled to China, India, Laos and Thailand since Myanmarโ€™s military-backed parliament selected him as president. His administration has also sought to improve relations with the US and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, while rejecting calls to release ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi. A high-level Myanmar delegation, including several ministers and the head of the Myanmar Space Agency, arrived in Moscow on August 17.
