"Instead of producing shells in an efficient and streamlined fashion, drop hunks of steel 5 feet down to the floor. The factoryโs signature device, meant to precisely stretch the steel for the artillery shells, instead often cracked it beyond repair. Then there were the giant press machines, which required regular pounding with a sledgehammer to function properly but still botched the shaping of nearly every shell."

๐พ ๐ ๐ JPMorgan warns a massive global food supply crisis could begin next year as fertilizer shortages tighten agricultural supply.
JPMorgan is the latest institutional research desk to warn that the next global food crisis may already be taking shape, driven by what its analysts describe as the "Five Ws": War, Weather, Warehousing, Water, and Waste.
In a new report titled Food Security Is National Security: A Compounding Storm, a team led by London-based senior global economist Nora Szentivanyi warned that disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and the emergence of a potentially historic El Niรฑo could weaken crop yields, constrain agricultural production, and keep food inflation elevated through the first half of 2027.
"Successive shocks since COVID have compounded, eroding food production capacity and keeping food price pressures elevated into 2027," Szentivanyi said, warning that "this is not a short-lived shock; it has reduced the likelihood of near-term disinflation, and the food inflation cycle is likely to exert pressure through 1H27."
She expects global food inflation to accelerate from 2.8% in the first half of 2026 to 5% in the first half of next year.
The warning comes despite a modest improvement in hunger statistics. About 645 million people faced hunger in 2025, down roughly 43 million from 2022. Yet 2.1 billion people, or 25.8% of the global population, still experienced moderate or severe food insecurity.
Szentivanyi outlined the most immediate vulnerability: fertilizer. She noted, "Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the coming super El Niรฑo are adding to fertilizer and food price pressures."
She said that "crop and price effects are still building and agricultural impacts lag the oceanic peak by 6 to 12 months."
Szentivanyi warned that this year's energy shock could roughly double the inflationary impact of a super El Niรฑo, lifting global food CPI by about 1.5 percentage points, compared with the historical .7-point increase. Food inflation is projected to reach a 5% annualized rate in the first half of 2027, adding .6 percentage points to headline inflation and slowing full-year disinflation by .3 points.
"Exposure is concentrated in South and Southeast Asia, including rice, sugar, and coffee; West Africa, including cocoa; and parts of East and Southern Africa," the analyst said, adding, "EM bears the brunt of El Niรฑo. The largest food inflation responses are concentrated in EM Asia and Latin America, where weather-sensitive agriculture plays a larger role in economic activity, and food carries a higher weight in consumption baskets. India, Colombia, Indonesia, Brazil, Taiwan, and Korea emerge as among the most sensitive economies"โ
Furthermore, China has been stockpiling food, fertilizer, energy, and industrial metals. While the West has strategic oil reserves (quickly draining to offset the loss of Gulf supplies), it lacks a meaningful fertilizer buffer. With the Hormuz chokepoint still disrupted, crop conditions deteriorating, and export controls spreading, Szentivanyi suggests that the next inflation shock may emerge not at the gas pump, as seen earlier this year, but potentially in the grocery aisle next year.
This comes as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's global food price index climbed to a three-year high in July.
Bank of America analyst Robert Ohmes recently warned that another food price spike could arrive in supermarkets this fall. He said that grocery inflation "may be on the way," citing a blended index of wages, diesel, and commodity costs.

Russia deploys warships to the Baltic Sea amid Putinโs threats against Europe
Russia has transferred the modern frigate Admiral Kasatonov from the Northern Fleet to the Baltic Sea. A few days earlier, the anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Levchenko also arrived there, according to Bild.
Kasatonov is one of Russiaโs most modern frigates and can launch Kalibr and Tsirkon cruise missiles. Levchenko is designed for submarine warfare and is also equipped with air defense systems, torpedoes, artillery, and helicopters.
The deployment is particularly notable because the ships appeared in the region amid Putinโs threats against European countries opposing Russiaโs โshadow fleet.โ The Kremlin has been using warships to escort its tankers and cargo vessels for several months.
Moscow has not officially explained the reasons for the deployment. However, maritime security expert Moritz Brake believes the Kremlinโs threats should not be dismissed as empty rhetoric, as they could be followed by concrete actions against European vessels.

๐ข Shipping on the Rhine in Germany is on the verge of collapse due to the drought.
According to the N-TV television channel, the water level in a key section of the river this morning was 8 cm below the zero point of the German measurement system (67.67 meters above sea level), and at night it dropped to 6 cm.
This has led to serious logistical problems: even lightly loaded cargo ships cannot navigate the Rhine.
German authorities are hoping for rain. Economists point out that the drop in water levels will further slow down the country's already weak economic growth, according to the report.

The US Navy has initiated development of the Naval Modular Missile (NMM) family, intended to radically reshape the architecture of shipborne air and missile defence. The concept is based on a standardised 250 mm interceptor built around a modular design. The missile includes standardised guidance, warhead, control-system and propulsion sections. This architecture allows the weapon to be adapted for a wide range of missions, from intercepting aerodynamic targets to engaging ballistic and manoeuvring hypersonic threats.
Particular attention is being paid to increasing ammunition density within Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) cells. Three NMM variants are being developed for surface combatants: the long-range version occupies a full cell, while optimised variants allow two or four missiles to be packed into a single cell. This provides a several-fold increase in the firepower available to an individual warship. In addition, one NMM variant is being adapted for launch from torpedo tubes or vertical launch tubes aboard Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
The NMM programme is intended to replace a number of existing surface-to-air missile types, simplifying logistics and reducing operating costs. Planned production is expected to reach 1,000 missiles per year within five years of the start of a full-scale production contract.
The introduction of NMM would allow the US Navy to build a layered defensive system capable of countering modern aerial threats, including future hypersonic weapons, while benefiting from the high flexibility of a modular missile platform.

๐ข Germany has advised its citizens to refrain from traveling within Ukraine by train before Independence Day.
The German Foreign Ministry has updated its recommendations for citizens, warning of an increased risk of travel within Ukraine in the days leading up to August 24th.
The ministry believes that during this period, it is impossible to rule out an intensification of Russian attacks on energy and transportation infrastructure, as well as civilian targets.
It is specifically noted that Ukrainian railway infrastructure continues to be a target of Russian strikes. Therefore, German citizens are advised to consider potential risks when planning travel within the country before Independence Day.

The US Navy and US Fifth Fleet are operating a fleet of about 20 ships in the northern Arabian Sea centered around two carrier strike groups - Lincoln and Bush - and an amphibious ready group - Boxer.
The loss of access to bases in and around the Persian Gulf means that all the food have to be procured either from local sources in and around the Indian Ocean, or brought in from East Asia.
To replenish the ships at sea with food, there are four ships available: USNS Arctic, Cesar Chavez, Wally Schirra and Alan Shepard. Some of these ships departed from bases in East Asia over a month ago.
Food, depending on the type, has specific shelf life. The Navy is well aware of this. Nuclear submarines load up all the food they need for months when they deploy. Surface ships have the advantage to receive fresh food on a more regular basis.
However, because of the number of ships on station, the limited number of store ships (four), and the elongated distance from supply sources, means that the food onboard ship will be of the type that can be stored, frozen or preserved for long duration. This means less fresh fruit & vegetables, or milk (butter there is good old fashion nuclear milk - if you know, you know).
What this story tells us, is that we need more logistics to keep our Navy at sea in a contested environment. In 2015, the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command re-introduced the concept of commercial shipping transferring fuel to Navy underway replenishment ships.
What we have lost are the commercial ships that can transfer dry stores and ammunition to restock.
Currently, the four stores ships have to shuttle between bases to the forward deployed fleet.
Remember, deployed warships are not cruise ships in the Caribbean. This does not mean we cannot do better, but admirals never like to prioritize and fund logistics over warships.

A โbattle of witsโ is unfolding between Hezbollah and Israeli forces around the strategic Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, Israeli outlet Walla reported, citing a senior Israeli military source.
โค Haaretz reports the Israeli military has โdecided not to allow Hezbollah operatives trapped in tunnels beneath southern Lebanon's Ali Taher ridge to leave unless they surrender, amid reports Israel is preparing an operation to seize the areaโ
โค Walla said Hezbollah is tracking Israeli positions and attacking detected troop movements, as occurred Saturday when a drone strike wounded three Israeli soldiers, including an officer. Hezbollah has not claimed the attack.
โค The Israeli outlet claimed Hezbollah is trying to resupply fighters trapped in underground facilities, who have emerged searching for food, while Israel hunts them and attempts to destroy the underground infrastructure.
โAnyone who emerges from the underground and surrenders will be taken to Israel for questioning, while anyone who remains underground will either die or we will kill him,โ the Israeli source claimed.
โค Walla reported that Israel attacked multiple areas after its soldiers were wounded but left Beirut and senior Hezbollah officials there โoff-limits due to an American demand.โ Israeli strikes killed 11 people, including three children, in Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani.
โค LโOrient Today correspondent Muntasser Abdallah reported that Israel on Sunday bombarded Ali Taher with white phosphorus shells, airstrikes and helicopter machine-gun fire, including overnight.
