TIL about Dr. Frances Kelsey, a newly hired FDA reviewer in 1960 who resisted relentless pharmaceutical pressure and refused to approve Thalidomide. Her insistence on rigorous safety data spared the U.S. from thousands of severe birth defects seen across Europe.

TIL A papyrus deciphered in 2024 revealed unknown info about Plato's last hours: a slave girl was playing music for him, and even though he was gravelly ill, he spend his last moments of lucidity criticising her performance. Per the same Papyrus, Plato had been sold into slavery earlier in his life

TIL that in 1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed Newfoundland for Queen Elizabeth I. Weeks later, after losing his largest ship and much of his supplies, stepping on a nail, and refusing repeated pleas to leave his small flagship, the Squirrel, he vanished beneath the Atlantic with all hands aboard.

I noticed this today and found it an odd Google feature. Remember when you could just turn off Bluetooth? Well it now comes with a little thing called we are going to just turn it back on tomorrow. If you don't disable that then it will turn itself back on. I find this curious because these flock and other cameras love when you have Bluetooth enabled. Especially the fake towers they put up to scan your device or even spoof cell tower connectivity. I've never had this "feature" on any phone before until the most recent android update.

They are also going after grapheneOS because it protects your privacy and will even wipe itself clean when a duress pin is entered. How odd.

The full story is almost as difficult to believe as the Professor's CV.

"To their credit, most of the faculty at Cambridge stood hard against this onslaught. They called Cofnas and other critics racists, then continued to call them racists. When that failed to stop the harassment, they called them racists again, but in different ways. They publicly declared that the University of Liverpool had done an investigation and determined that Arday’s work was plagiarism free, and if you didn’t trust them to declare themselves not guilty of a serious, discrediting professional lapse, you were, by all logic, racist."

I fully expect to see a guy who looks like Russell Crow with a goatee and glasses come out, and for them to all act like it is Mitch McConnell, and he just changed up his look. It probably took them a while to find even a vaguely close match. https://x.com/GeneralMCNews/status/2085453140829311192

"Viewed from the inside our mass culture no longer makes sense. It is a litany of contradictions of reality, a cacophony of countersanities.

"From the outside it is completely incoherent. It does not match the world, it refuses to recognise reality, it acts as if reality can be remade in its own image, it is increasingly irrelevant to anyone outside its shrinking sphere of influence.

"This is an economic and political system whose ideological beliefs have translated into the production of incoherence.

"If you want to live an orderly, meaningful and valuable life a coherent view of being and reality is better than its opposite.

"Try to find the most complete view of life, the world, and of human affairs which satisfies this description and test it against the competition."

πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ίβš”οΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Ukraine loses more than half its Kiev-region warehouse space to Russian strikes

Russia has destroyed more than half of the Kiev region's pre-war warehouse capacity since its full-scale invasion began, after strikes overnight on August 5 hit 10 warehouse facilities totalling about 100,000 square metres, according to Ukrainian real estate analysts cited by Ukraine Business News.

The Kiev region's warehouse real estate market has now lost more than 1.2mn square metres, over half of its pre-war stock, with more than 400,000 square metres destroyed since the start of July alone. That is a sharp acceleration from the roughly 500,000 square metres destroyed across the whole of Ukraine over the preceding 12 months, as IntelliNews reported in July - the Kiev region alone has now roughly matched that nationwide total in a single month.

The attack is part of a wider Russian campaign against Ukraine's civilian logistics and retail infrastructure -  after  Operation Wildberries, Russia's own e-commerce warehouses came under reciprocal Ukrainian attack - and it is now large enough to move rental prices and squeeze the supply chains that keep Kiev shops and online retailers stocked.

Despite record construction activity, new development cannot keep pace with the scale of destruction, and there is now almost no vacant warehouse space left in the Kiev region, particularly large blocks of 10,000 square metres or more that retail chains and logistics operators depend on. The shortage is forcing companies to redesign supply chains, and analysts expect it to push warehouse rental rates up by 7-10%, raise transportation costs and eventually filter through to consumer prices.

The trend was already visible before this month: one of the region's largest hubs, the 100,200-square-metre Amtel logistics complex in Belogorodka, was almost completely destroyed in a July 19 missile strike that wiped out inventory belonging to Goodwine, WOG, Hilti and several other companies; its owners say rebuilding could take six to ten months.

The current campaign is not the first time Russia has targeted logistics. Leading courier company Nova Poshta’s warehouse was completely destroyed in October 2023, killing several workers. The company rebuilt the facility and continues to make deliveries of packages right up to the frontline.

The U.S. Department of Justice has supported a lawsuit filed by the Holy Trinity Monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCO) against the construction of a wind farm near the monastery in New York, Heartlander News reports.

Representatives of the Holy Trinity Monastery of the ROCOR in Jordanville believe that the project could harm the community’s religious activities and violate the monks’ right to freedom of religion. The monastery and seminary are among the largest spiritual centers of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, and their facilities are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

πŸ“‹ The Rolling Hills Wind project calls for the construction of dozens of wind turbines over 200 meters tall on the land surrounding the monastery. The monastery also believes that this industrial development will disrupt the historic character of the area, the tranquility necessary for monastic life, and the conditions for pilgrimage.

πŸ˜” Russians destroyed an 18th-century wooden Cossack church.

In Beryslav, Kherson region, the Holy Presentation Churchβ€”an 18th-century architectural monumentβ€”burned down following a drone attack.

According to the regional military administration, it was the only surviving example of Ukrainian wooden Cossack sacred architecture from that era. The church was built in 1725 at the Perevolochna Fortress from oak logs without the use of metal nails.

Absolutely shocking development.

The scientific community is worried that Darwinian natural selection isn't progressive and inclusive enough, so they've declared that Darwin's rival Lamarck was right, because he argued that organisms' own choosie-woosies determine the course of their evolutionary development. As evidence, they point to some worms that pass down memories that get deleted after a few generations before going back to baseline.

Researchers have declared the Darwinian Modern Synthesis "a biological manifestation of eco-fascism," saying "evolution is a system built entirely on non-consent." But since scientists discovered that a worm can pass down its lived trauma, as one researcher put it, "the age of inherited privilege is coming to an end," adding "the bio-essentialist paradigm is giving way to what might be better called 'bio-democracy.'"
