Washingtonβs sale of euros to boost the yen late last week blindsided the European Central Bank, with the US only informing its counterparts in Frankfurt after the historic currency intervention.
The ECB was made aware of the USβs move to sell euros to buy yen on Friday after the trade had been executed, according to several people familiar with the matter.
The lack of co-ordination highlights the unusual nature of the first joint Washington-Tokyo effort to boost the yen in almost 30 years. Typically, the US would have been expected to use dollars in such an operation.
Some senior ECB officials viewed the USβs decision to use euros in its trade as an unprecedented breach of longstanding conventions on co-operation between western monetary authorities, the people said.
The reason Washington intervened at all is the part nobody wants to say plainly. Japan is the largest foreign holder of US Treasuries. The yen was at its weakest since 1986. If the yen falls far enough, Japanese institutions sell their most liquid foreign asset to raise cash. That asset is Treasuries. The selling pushes American yields higher at the exact moment the thirty-year just touched 5.28 percent. Washington did not intervene to help Japan. Washington intervened to prevent the Treasury market from absorbing a forced seller at a nineteen-year high in yields.
The convention that was broken to execute this trade is the same kind of convention the reserve confiscation broke in 2022. That one taught central banks their dollar reserves were not safe from seizure. This one taught the ECB that dollar-system cooperation is not safe from unilateral action by its architect. Both lessons point the same direction: build the alternatives faster.
The fix is eating the architecture it was built to preserve.

Hey TPP Fans! My new album, Koi Dance, is out now on all streaming platforms. It's 90% off on Bandcamp with promo code koipond: https://tjcookmusic.bandcamp.com/album/koi-dance
πKoi Danceπ is a musical journey through a backyard koi pond, with each of the aquatic creatures showing up for their visit to the pond (naturally, the stately "Japanese Trapdoor Snails" show up last, but they bring a party with them). Even a goofy "Sturgeon" shows up from the river to join the festivities.
After the creatures assemble, the "Pond Ball" commences, and the fish and snails enjoy the "Moonlight Shimmer" across the pond's surface. As the night wears on, the aquatic friends turn contemplative, pondering God's Glory.
Finally, the koi, the minnows, the snails, and the loaches settle down (and the sturgeon heads home) as the sun rises.
Drawing inspiration from Czech Romantic composer BedΕich Smetana and the programmatic work of French composer Camille Saint-SaΓ«ns, Koi Dance is a labor eight months in the making.

"One of the most terrifying realities we live with in Gaza one that almost no one in the world talks about is the presence of more than 100 military towers, each standing over 30 meters tall, surrounding the Gaza Strip from every direction.
Each tower is equipped with an automated machine gun that fires remotely without a soldier standing behind it. It makes no distinction between a child, a woman, or an elderly person, nor between civilians and anyone else. It can open fire at any moment, turning the simple act of moving into a potential death sentence.
These machine guns are capable of firing more than 6,000 rounds per minute, with a range of nearly 3,000 meters enough to cover most of the small area of Gaza where the population has been confined.
We are not only living under bombardment; we are living under constant surveillance by machines that know neither mercy nor hesitation. Gaza has become completely exposed to these weapons, and fear follows us with every step. Even leaving to search for food or water can become your last journey.
This is not science fiction. It is not a scene from a movie. This is the reality we live every single day in Gaza.
We are literally living inside Squid Game."

and the towers are not new, not as of 2023. They are indeed terrifying, surreal, deadly. When I lived in Gaza (bt 2008-2013), farmers I accompanied were constantly being fired on either by Israeli soldiers who pulled up in jeeps to a spot along the fence imprisoning Gaza, got out and assumed sniper positions, or from these remotely-controlled towers.

They also fired on unarmed protesters, often fatally-so, otherwise maiming young men and women who were protesting being locked down and besieged, cut off from the world and denied the very basics of life.

Muslim armies invaded Spain in 711 AD and occupied it for nearly 800 years.
The Reconquista was not a myth or βcolonial project.β It was a centuries-long Christian struggle to reclaim their own homeland from Islamic rule. It ended in 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabella took Granada, the last Muslim stronghold.

ππΊπΈ Newly-released Pentagon documents blow the lid off concealed US casualty counts in Iran warβs opening act
What the Pentagon chose to withhold for months is now impossible to ignore, the data reveals the truth about the war's first weeks. At least 400 American soldiers were counted as casualties, some of them suffering critical, life-threatening wounds, with head trauma being the most prevalent injury, affecting at least 170.
The army had the most casualties: over 270, among them were 64 officers, two generals, and roughly 30% reservists.
π The warβs deadliest incident occurred on March 1, when an Iranian drone strike hit Kuwaitβs operations center at Port Shuaiba, killing six American troops, after US generals allegedly ignored prior intelligence warnings about the vulnerability of the site.
CENTCOM has come under scrutiny for its limited disclosures. Two of the bloodiest days - 29 casualties on March 3 and 70 on March 18 - were never publicly detailed by the command, which has continued to release only monthly casualty totals.
Following Trumpβs decision to end the truce on July 8, US forces have suffered more than 200 additional casualties and four more deaths in renewed strikes.
