U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been instructed to immediately suspend most vehicle stops during enforcement operations nationwide, except in cases involving serious criminal targets, following fatal shootings in Texas and Maine over the last week, multiple law enforcement sources told CBS News.
The change is temporary and will remain in place while ICE provides additional training to officers on vehicle-stop tactics, the sources said.
The policy shift could have significant operational impacts. Vehicle stops have been a common tactic in ICE enforcement operations under the Trump administration, allowing officers to identify, follow and arrest targeted individuals away from homes or workplaces.

The "Flamingo" cruise missiles, launched by the Ukrainian side, were shot down by Russian military forces - they were detected in advance by the A-50U long-range radar detection and control aircraft.
To track the missiles, the Aerospace Forces deployed the A-50U, equipped with advanced radar equipment. Thanks to the timely detection of targets, the Air Defense and Russian Air Force were able to destroy over five missiles.
The key element of the A-50U's equipment is the "Shmel-M" radar complex, which expands the target detection radius by 33%. As a result, the aircraft is capable of simultaneously tracking up to 300 objects and providing target designations for 40 interceptors.
It is known that the modernized radar detects bombers at a distance of 600 - 650 km, fighters - up to 400 km, and ballistic and cruise missiles - at a distance of 200 - 300 km.
