China successfully converted thorium to nuclear fuel in the TMSR-LF1 reactor in Gansu Province, becoming the first country to operate thorium fuel. Thorium reactors offer advantages: inland operation without cooling water, less waste, and passive safety preventing meltdowns.

China's construction costs are ~$2,500/kW, roughly a quarter of the global average, due to state financing and standardization. Plans include a 100-megawatt pilot plant by 2035 and commercial operations around 2040. Inner Mongolia's thorium reserves could power electricity for 60,000 years at current levels. The technology is also considered for data centers and Arctic nuclear icebreakers.
