TIL from 1970 to 1983 the number of Swiss watchmakers declined from 1600 to 600 and employment more than halved. This is because they were rapidly losing out to technologically modern Quartz watches by Japanese and American makers, causing panic to Switzerland's national pride (the "Quartz crisis").

As Americans confront a surge in prices at the pump, another inflation wave is headed for the grocery store.
A combination of factors including bad weather, tariffs and a dwindling cattle herd are already pushing up grocery prices at an above-average pace. In April, they rose by the most in nearly four years, and economists say the impact of the Iran war and a potential El NiΓ±o weather pattern will only add to pressures into 2027.
The hit to US household finances from higher grocery bills is set to intensify just ahead of the November midterm elections, amplifying affordability as a defining issue. And to a greater extent than the surge in gas prices, the slower-moving food shock will be difficult to reverse quickly because the size of autumn harvests is determined by planting decisions made in the spring.
βItβs going to be a challenging year,β said Ricky Volpe, an agribusiness professor at California Polytechnic State University who previously worked at the US Department of Agricultureβs Economic Research Service. βFood is going to become less affordable, and consumers should be prepared for it.β
The latest USDA food price outlook, published Friday, projected a 3.2% advance in grocery prices this year, while Volpe said he expects inflation more on the order of 4% to 4.5%.
Outsize price increases so far in 2026 have reflected a mix of bad luck, trade policy and slower-moving pressures linked to climate change. The weather in particular has not been kind to American farmers, who have endured outbursts of record-breaking heat, historic cold, ping-pong size hail and wildfires.
The US saw its warmest-ever start to the year, with temperatures running about 6F (3C) above average through the end of April, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. The early heat prompted some domestic crops to begin blossoming weeks ahead of schedule instead of remaining dormant throughout the winter, leaving them exposed to subsequent frosts, according to Brad Rippey, a USDA meteorologist.
Beef prices, among the most politically sensitive in the US, rose to a record in April thanks to the smallest cattle herd in 75 years, squeezed by drought and high production costs.
Tomato prices, meanwhile, surged 33% over the last two months after two winter storms brought widespread damage during the peak of the growing season in Florida β while shipments from Mexico were declining following the Trump administrationβs imposition of duties on imports.
Heat and drought in the western and central US spell more pressures to come. California accounts for almost half of annual US vegetable and three-quarters of fruit and nut cash receipts, and diminished snowpack in the Sierra Nevada this year β to just 23% of typical levels as of mid-April β has raised concerns about irrigation supplies.
Drought has also spread across the nationβs breadbasket, where staple wheat crops that are typically used to make all-purpose flour or pasta have withered for lack of rain. As of May 19, 70% of US winter wheat production was in areas of drought, along with 25% of corn production, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

CNN reports he has agreed to pay a fine of $2 million. John Bolton was paid $2 million dollars in advance for a book he wrote, The Room Where It Happened, which the Trump administration tried to stop from being released.

Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A. and those that are with us. But donβt the Dumocrats, and various seemingly unpatriotic Republicans, understand that it is MUCH tougher for me to properly do my job and negotiate, when political hacks keep negatively βchirping,β at levels never seen before, over and over again, that I should move faster, or move slower, or go to war, or not go to war, or whatever. Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end - It always does! President DJT

We were promised the US uranium from Uranium One would never leave the US, but it did.
Some was sent to Canada, which was then sent to Europe and Asia, namely the UK, France, Germany, and Japan.
After that, we donβt (officially) know where it went.
Uranium laundering.
I think Trumpβs animosity towards Canada/EU/NATO, might have something to do with Uranium One. Heβs been showing us they arenβt our allies for a reason. Heβs been backing away from NATO for a reason. Trudeau feared Trump for a reason.
This also might explain why the EU/NATO have been unwilling to help with Iran. They donβt want Trump to succeed, because if it turns out that Iran got their hands on US uranium from Uranium One, it wouldnβt just be Obama and his administration who are responsible, Europe and Canada have dirt on their hands also.
Obviously Russia played a role as well via Rosatom, and perhaps this is why they have offered to take the enriched uranium in Iran.
I think itβs safe to say Iran is about much more than just Iran. This potentially implicates multiple heads of state around the globe.
The biggest crime in history.

Trump's recent EO pushes a full customs overhaul by closing decades-old import loopholes, proposing better certification and vetting rules, and ensuring foreign importers have financial skin in the game domestically.
No more dine and dashing America's markets, in effect. This doubles as a crackdown on contraband, cheap Chinese products and Cartel mules.

A few hundred thousand federal workers have been forced out under President Trump in around a year; a purge similar to that of Andrew Jackson. This Schedule Policy/Career EO extends accountability to the smaller but very important pool of higher service positions over them.
This would be a 'drain the swamp' mechanism and prevent disagreeable or left-wing people with a position over policy from being a permanent problem.
