A Greek bronze shield blazon, c. 400–300 BC.

This piece would originally have been mounted to a hoplite’s circular shield (aspis) as part of a warrior’s panoply. Shield blazons often featured animals or mythological figures and served as identifying emblems in battle. Similar shield devices appear frequently in Greek vase painting and relief sculpture, though very few bronze examples have survived.

The lion is shown biting and gripping a spearhead. According to Christie’s, the image symbolized the futility of attacking the shield’s owner, with the spear represented as powerless against him. The motif itself is relatively rare in Greek art, though parallels appear in Greek coinage and metalwork from Thessaly and southern Italy.
