For the first time in 50 years, humans have seen the far side of the Moon with their own eyes. The new image was released by the astronauts of the Artemis II mission.

In the photo, the near side of the Moon—the side visible from Earth—appears on the right (recognizable by its dark spots), while the far side is on the left.

Before this, the far side of the Moon had only been seen by humans in 1972 during the Apollo 17 mission.

The Artemis II astronauts also set a new record for the greatest distance from Earth in human spaceflight history.

The crew traveled more than 406,000 kilometers from Earth, surpassing the previous record held by the Apollo 13 crew in 1970, who reached 401,056 kilometers.
