In the story, the word comes from a fictional Martian language and describes a form of understanding so complete that the boundary between observer and observed dissolves. If to grok is to collapse the distance between knower and known, then understanding is not passive. Immersion reshapes perception and gradually alters the one who participates. What we repeatedly enter, we begin to internalize.
