A few days ago, we explored the #OwnVoices movement through Zoë Marriott’s deeply personal account of writing The Moonlit Maze — and the unexpected journey of recognising her own autistic experience in her fiction.

Today, we’re looking at the movement from a rather different angle. Our new exam task is based on a survey of US librarians and explores how familiar they are with #OwnVoices, as well as the challenges they face when trying to identify suitable books.

So, if you’ve read our previous article, this is a chance to revisit the topic from a more research-based perspective — and put your English to the test at the same time.

Few days are equally important to teachers and students. Whether you teach or study, work at a state institution or a private school, use a laptop or a piece of chalk worn down to a stub, Knowledge Day is always marked on your calendar.

When I started university - it feels like a lifetime ago - our dean would wish us a “Happy New Year” on this day. And she was right. The first of September is a day of new beginnings, new milestones to reach and new frontiers to push back.

Some of you, I know, have been waiting for this day for weeks. I am no exception. We have had a productive summer, conducted dozens of interviews with prospective students, and are now ready to get down to work. I hope you are too.

On behalf of AEE, I wish you everything an advanced student could ask for: words memorised quickly, grammatical structures used effectively and texts written coherently. May this academic year broaden those proverbial horizons, and may you remain forever hungry to learn something new.

September is not only a month of new beginnings; it is also the month in which one of our dearest teachers celebrates her birthday. She is loved by her students, respected by her colleagues and, most importantly, a wonderful friend to us all.

Dear Karina, I still remember the day we first met, when you joined our Proficiency group, as though it were yesterday. You were a ray of enthusiasm, and your sharp, inquisitive mind made you an invaluable member of the group. The same qualities now enrich every lesson you teach and every staff meeting we have.

Even after that first meeting, I knew that one day you would become a valuable member of our team - not merely because you are awesome, which goes without saying, but because you possess those rare qualities that make the world around you a better place.

May all your wishes come true, and may your students always be as bright and enthusiastic as you are. Stay happy, stay awesome, stay you.

Изначально моей главной целью было развитие более гладкой речи и обогащение активного словарного запаса, чтобы выйти из длительной паузы в изучении языка. В итоге в течение учебного года я приобрела намного больше.

В начале каждого занятия при разогреве можно было душевно побеседовать друг с другом, рассказать о последних новостях в жизни. Это было настолько тепло и приятно, что уже через несколько недель я ощущала эти занятия как поход на дружескую встречу с единомышленниками. Сами занятия построены настолько грамотно, что не усвоить материал было просто невозможно. Мы регулярно возвращались к уже пройденным темам, закрепляя контекстуальное применение различных выражений. Отдельную благодарность хочу выразить за шикарные модули в Quizlet, это так же стало для меня сильным бустом.

I teach writing.

Mostly, of course, I teach exam writing for C2 Proficiency, as this is naturally what most of my students are interested in. There are exceptions, though. One of them is a CPE holder who wants to push her skills further, prudently acknowledging that there is more to the English language than an A on a certificate.

Yesterday, we had a class in a coffee shop. The lesson focused on showing a character’s feelings without explicitly naming them, as well as on the internal coherence of a text: how writing flows at the level of ideas rather than merely through functional language.

It is very tempting to begin yet another sentence with a linker, isn’t it? But when every connection is made explicit, the text gradually loses its rhythm and pace, and somewhere beneath all that functional language, the author’s voice begins to fade.

Creative writing, unlike essays, for instance, makes it particularly easy to see what this deeper cohesion actually looks like. So, to show you how it works, I decided to share one of our tasks and my own response to it.

The trick is simple. Write a sentence and then think about the questions a reader might naturally ask after reading it. Make sure there aren’t too many - one or two at most. Then answer one of them in the next sentence. That sentence creates another question; the next one answers it. And gradually, the text begins to move forward almost by itself.

This way, you don’t have to dive into the world of technicalities: Have I used a pronoun? Have I added an organisational device? Do I need a linker here? At that moment, none of this really matters.

What matters is the idea, and how naturally one idea grows out of another until something abstract is transformed into something solid: a coherent piece of writing.
