💡HDS weekly debate and punishment theory workshop 16.1.💡

Immanuel Kant said, “Even if a civil society were to be dissolved by the consent of all its members, the last murderer remaining in prison would first have to be executed […]; for otherwise the people can be regarded as collaborators in his public violation of justice.”
Max Weber said that a state is characterized by a “monopoly to the legitimized use of violence.”
Christian Grey said, “I have rules. If you follow them, I'll reward you. If you don't, I'll punish you.”

Why do we punish? How much should we punish? Who should we punish? Join us for a workshop about criminal justice and the most common theories of punishment.

CLARIFICATION FOR NEW PEOPLE

We have two debating societies, Helsinki Debating Society and Aalto Debating Society. On Tuesdays, HDS has a session, and on Thursdays, ADS has a session.

There are no restrictions on who can participate in which session, both get students from either university as well as people who aren’t students at all.

Currently, ADS is organising more competitive, advanced debate sessions on Thursdays to practice for an upcoming tournament - we recommend you come to a few Tuesday sessions before trying it out. However, if you’re interested in competing, they’re a great option to prepare with a designated pair in the future.
