🏴"...but while he was in the British Union of Fascists he used his undoubted ability to make it more anti-Jewish. Mosley himself later attributed his 'quarrel with the Jews', as he always called it, to his wish to avoid another war with Germany and their desire for Britain to engage in one on behalf of their co-religionists. The quarrel actually started before this had become a factor. His friendly interest in Nazism excited Jewish suspicion, and Jews were numerous not only in the Communist Party but in the international banking community, which Mosley blamed for keeping Britain attached to the world trading system and subjecting its workers to sweated competition. By May 1935, Mosley had been offensive enough about the Jews for Julius Streicher to change his attitude; Streicher sent a telegram of congratulations following a speech at Leicester, to which Mosley replied: "The power of Jewish corruption must be destroyed in all countries before peace and justice can be successfully achieved in
Europe.'

Pryce-Jones cites this telegram as a sign of generalized anti-semitism. It certainly shows that Mosley at that time was hostile to the Jews; but as to whether he was anti-semitic, there was in the early seventies a controversy between him and certain commentators. It generated more heat than light because on each side the expression 'anti-semitic' was used in a different sense, so that each in its own terms was right. Mosley's critics used 'anti-semitic' to mean 'anti-Jewish', as in modern usage it generally does. They found it easy to show that Mosley had attacked the Jews frequently and with venom. He himself had used the term 'anti-semitism' in this sense, and admitted to it, when he was questioned by Norman Birkett after his wartime arrest.

Yet Mosley had a point. There was a type of anti-semitism to which he never subscribed, namely the view that the Jews were a morally inferior race, a kind of criminal tribe inherently worse than the rest of us. This was the view of Gobineau and other racialist writers including, with reservations, Houston Stewart Chamberlain; it was what Hitler believed. The Nuremberg laws banning marriage between Jew and Gentile were a product of it, as ultimately was the holocaust. Mosley never believed anything of this sort. Whatever the terms in which he attacked the Jews, his grounds were not racial but political. His record before, as well as after, his anti-Jewish period makes this quite clear. There was always a vital difference between him and Hitler. For Hitler a Jew, however well-intentioned, could never fully renounce his Jewishness; for Mosley he could do so. In the context, people naturally consider what was about to be done to the Jews by Hitler, the man with whom Mosley wanted peace and some of whose language about the Jews he was using. Mosley will probably never be forgiven for this association. However, it is only fair to draw attention to the distinction between the two."
