Callback scams now make up 45% of email scams reported

→ A callback scam arrives as a message about a failed payment or urgent charge, but instead of a suspicious link it contains only a phone number.
→ When you call, you reach a criminal posing as a bank or government body.
→ This type of scam has grown from 29% to 45% of reported email scams between 2025 and 2026, precisely because it slips past the instinct most people have trained themselves to apply to links.

If a message you did not expect asks you to call a number, do not use that number. Find the organisation's contact details on their official website or app and call from there instead. If you suspect you have already spoken to a scammer, contact your bank immediately.

OpenAI has built its own learning platform at academy.openai.com, where anyone with a free ChatGPT account can take self-paced AI courses and earn a shareable certificate at no cost. The catalog includes 14 courses covering AI basics, prompting, agents, and tracks built for small business owners, educators, and students. No paid subscription is required at any stage, including the certificate.

Before you start
Each course includes an assessment. You need to score 80% or higher to earn the shareable OpenAI Academy badge. The AI Foundations course takes roughly 60 to 75 minutes and requires no technical background.

WhatsApp adds scam detection and a stronger account password

WhatsApp is rolling out three security changes confirmed in early October 2026. An on-device scam alert now flags suspicious message patterns in real time, and it does this entirely on your phone without sending your message content to Meta's servers. The familiar 6-digit PIN for two-step verification is being replaced by a full text password, making it harder for someone to take over your account.

Before you start
WhatsApp is also adding AI labels to images and videos shared in channels, so you can see when content may have been generated by AI. These features are rolling out gradually, so they may not appear on every phone at the same time.

Gemini now has a dedicated study hub for school account users

Google has expanded the Gemini student hub to Google Workspace for Education accounts, meaning students who sign in with a school-issued Google account can now access it alongside personal Gmail users. The hub gathers study tools, summarisation, Q&A, and learning aids, in one place inside the Gemini app, so you spend less time switching between different Google products.

1. Open the Gemini app
Launch the Gemini app on your phone or visit gemini.google.com and sign in with your Google account.

2. Look for the student hub
On the home screen, look for the student hub section or tap the menu (≡) to find it.

3. Choose a study tool
Select summarise, ask a question, or any other tool listed, then paste or type your study material.

Good to know
Google confirmed the rollout in its October 2026 release notes, with the expansion expected to complete by mid-November 2026. If the hub does not appear on your account yet, it may still be rolling out to your region.
