Area code is the 3 digits at the start of the number, for example in 631-111-22-33 the area code is 631, which is assigned to Suffolk County, New York (thanks, Google). Each state and big city has multiple area codes, you can choose one (e.g. only some part of New York), or you can provide multiple (e.g. anywhere in Florida). When you specify an area code, the price for the resulting rental automatically gets increased 20%. Carrier selection works similarly - you can choose vz (Verizon), tmo (T-Mobile), att (AT&T). This selection also bumps the price by 20%. We recommend that you try different carriers if you often run into an issue where service tells you the number was used before.
