When my brother was born, I got separated from my mother at age 2 - not literally, but you know how it is when there's a newborn. All the attention goes there, which is completely understandable. That's when I became even closer to my grandma, and she basically took over raising me. She became the most kind and caring person in my life in ways I can't even describe.
Several years ago, she had this terrible accident where she fell from a ladder and hit the back of her head. She needed serious, long surgery and thank God it went well... but she lost her long-term memory. She forgets anything we talk about after an hour, and this dementia keeps getting worse.
The hardest part is that every time we finish breakfast or lunch, she asks me again within the hour: "Have you had lunch/breakfast, my grandson? Make sure you eat on time and eat well - you don't look good." I keep saying "yes, sure" with a smile, but inside it's eating me alive.
She raised me when my mom was focused on my newborn brother, and now she can't even remember that she just fed me. But she's still trying to take care of me, still worried about whether I'm eating enough. That's just who she is - even when her mind is failing, her heart remembers to love me.
It's like losing her while she's still here, you know? Every repeated conversation reminds me of what we've lost, but also shows me that some things - like how much she loves me - are too deep to forget completely.

Here we go again! ChatGPT almost harmed a user by suggesting: "mix vinegar and bleach to make dishes crystal clear", this combination actually produces a toxic and dangerous gas called chlorine. ⛽️
Fortunately, the person was aware of this and spotted the mistake it made. Several months ago we had another case where "ChatGPT, through a fortune-telling prompt, indirectly suggested a woman end her marriage, leading her to file for divorce based on the AI's interpretation of coffee grounds."🤦♂️

24. Peak by Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool - (Talent is a myth and this book makes the debunking crystal clear, all it needs to build expertise in any field is deliberate practice), 4/5 ⭐️
25. Advances in Empirical Translation Studies by Meng Ji and et al.. - Textbook published in 2018 quite old compared to the rate of acceleration being made in LLM translation but good to build and backup foundational understanding. 4.1/5 ⭐️
26. A short history of Nearly everything by Bill Bryson - I made a separate post about this HERE that should tell you everything, a must read. 4.5/5 ⭐️
27. Troyanskiy Machine - The First ever Machine Translation, ideas suggested in 1933 (in theory but never got into full application), concept is close to Interlingua. 4/5 ⭐️
28. Statistical Machine Translation by Philip Koehn - (Second Paradigm shift which is caused by probability calculating machines in translation fields, Philip gives crystal clear definitions of every part of how it works, must read to build a solid foundational understanding of the progress in Machine translation.) 4.2/5 ⭐️

I don't understand one thing about us humans, we tend to follow what others are doing, copy them and imitate like it's encoded to our DNA. The weird thing is even if the group of some people doing something "stupid" - (in a good way) others who are watching would do the same at the very least (even if they don't have their own reasoning behind it they still follow what others are doing)
Is it because of FOMO and Survival mechanism? Like, if we do not do something that gets accepted and approval of the group it threatens our survival. Mostly because we might get outcasted by them, and our brain does anything it takes to survive and pass out the genes for the next generation. History proves this, Sapiens outcompeted Neanderthals because they could cooperate and work in big groups, hunt, and be efficient this way.
Yet, we don't live in the caves anymore nor cooperating on a large scale, cooperating is good but the instinct of getting the approval of the group is the notorious remnant of that narrative from the past?
