Forwarded from Malicious Manifold Miscellany (Chymos)
Last year, I wanted to make a post for the Transgender Day of Rememberance, but not only could I not think of anything anyone else hadn't already said better, I had only been out for about five months, and I didn't feel like it was my place to talk about something so serious.
Today, I don't want to fall into the same trap. I could link you to the list of known murders of trans and GNC people this past year, and I'm going to, but other people will do that as well, many giving touching memorials, a skill which I do not possess. I could also give you words of warning to keep yourselves and those close to you safe, but you will hear those elsewhere as well, and rightly so.
I'm going to leave the above to those more eloquent than myself. What I am good at, most days at least, is stubbornly finding something positive and clinging onto it for one day, and then the next, and so on.
I'm not going to tell you not to be sad, not to remember the people taken from us well before their time, or that things are fine. Sadness is normal, you should remember, and things are not yet fine. The linked list is shorter than last year (by about 15%), but it is still too long, and only contains names that got reported on, and for the most part, does not include suicide.
What I am going to ask you to do, however, is to remember something other than names, something very simple. Remember that you are still here, and you matter. Despite everything, you still fight, from the banal to the extraordinary, the minor inconveniences to the major problems: the everyday struggles of living under late-stage capitalism, orders from oppressive governments, the actions of families who don't understand, abuse, bigotry, expensive health care... you might not experience all of these, or you might deal with every single one and more. Maybe you actively advocate for trans rights on a large scale, maybe you merely exist in spite of people who would rather you not, both are their own, different struggles. But you're still here, and we're all stronger for having you with us. Your very presence flies in the face of the ignorant and hateful, and I implore you: let's keep it that way.
Thank you.
