China is continuing its sell-off of U.S. Treasuries, with holdings now at their lowest since 2008.

Between June 2025 and June 2026, its position shrank from $731.4 billion to $633.4 billion.

At its peak in February 2019, China held a record $1.13 trillion in U.S. government debt—once the largest holder. But Japan claimed the top spot in June 2019 and has maintained it since. Now, as China offloads Treasuries, it’s increasingly turning to gold.
