Russia's "red line" of NATO expansion and Western involvement in Ukraine - that which risked Russia invading Ukraine - has been an understanding of the US for ~20 years. Fiona Hill, the Regime's favorite Russia "expert", predicted in 2008 that Russia might take preemptive military action in response to potential NATO expansion to the East.

The regime's proxy is Ukraine but their target is Russia. Consider the possibility that the West wanted war. Not for the benefit of Ukraine, as its people would suffer the costs and casualties. But for the West to weaken Putin (through penalties and sanctions and damage to their currency and economy) and increase the likelihood of regime change within Russia.

For those in the Regime who hope for regime change in Russia: be careful what you wish for, because Putin's predecessor - if it comes to that - might be much worse.
