Toray to increase carbon fiber tow capacity by more than 20%
Capital investments to Spartanburg, S.C., and Gumi, Korea facilities, in response to market demand, will increase annual capability to 35,000 metrics tons beginning in 2025.
Toray Industries Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) has announced plans to increase regular carbon fiber tow production capacity at two facilities. Capital investments will add lines to Toray Composite Materials America’s Spartanburg, S.C., U.S. plant and the Toray Advanced Materials Korea plant in Gumi. These investments will increase the Toray Group’s annual capacity by more than 20% to 35,000 metric tons beginning in 2025.
Toray reports that these capacity increases are in response to the market situation in the U.S. and Korea, where demand for pressure vessel applications is rising. Fueled by the ongoing clean energy revolution in hydrogen, natural gas and other industrial applications, these expansions target high-strength carbon fibers up to 24,000 filaments per tow. The capacity increase will also complement total supply for other core markets such as aviation.
Toray anticipates demand for regular carbon fiber tow to expand by 17% annually on a decarbonization megatrend. This trend is signaling the growing demand for compressed natural gas (CNG) delivery vehicles and gas transportation tanks, increasing the need for CNG, hydrogen tanks and other pressure vessel applications. This trend will also increase the adoption of this material for passenger cars, trucks, trains and ships that use fuel cells.
Toray has made growing sustainably pivotal to Project AP-G 2025, its medium-term management program. Accordingly, the company has positioned industrial applications of its carbon fiber composite materials business to accelerate measures tackling climate change. Toray will fully leverage its comprehensive capabilities in keeping with its corporate philosophy of contributing to society by creating new value and help materialize a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.

Fully recyclable Fully recyclable composite mold incorporates Arkema Elium resin
Collaborative project with milling and tooling company Merritt Precision achieves sustainable fiberglass boat mold that meets manufacturing, recyclability needs.
In collaboration with milling and tooling company Merritt Precision (Merritt Island, Fla., U.S.), a Correct Craft company, Arkema (King of Prussia, Pa., U.S.) unveils its first entirely recyclable glass fiber composite mold using Elium liquid thermoplastic resin. The recyclable resin has been meticulously tailored for infusion processes of sizable components with low viscosity, long reactivity and a low exothermic reaction. While its use extends to diverse mold types, Elium resin is particularly suited for the marine sector, catering to the fabrication of composite watercraft.
Following IBEX 2023 in Tampa, Fla., U.S., Elium will be made commercially available. “The qualities inherent in the fully recyclable composite mold are not only beneficial for the ecosystem but also meet the needs of our manufacturing process,” Greg Warren, Merritt Precision’s technical director of operations, says.
Industries spanning marine, wind energy and transportation sectors, among others, rely on composite molds for production component manufacturing. These molds are predominantly fabricated from thermoset resins. Although they meet manufacturing requirements, their use is confined to a specific number of parts or years, averaging around four years before replacement. This conventional practice, says Arkema, creates substantial landfill waste, as the non-recyclable thermoset resins are commonly disposed or discarded.
Elium resin delivers attributes like those of thermoset resins while granting the recyclability advantage, enabling retired mold laminates to be reused to make new tooling or marine products themselves.
“Elium resin consistently forges pathways to solutions and opportunities in the marine industry and we are excited to present our progress in sustainability in partnership with Merritt Precision,” Nicolas Valloir, business manager at Arkema, says. “This innovation reflects the shared values and commitment of our respective companies in shaping a more sustainable collective future.”

Mikrosam filament production line supports Amargo tank production
Mikrosam system features will support the production of Amargo’s chemically resistant pressure vessels or hydrogen storage in industrial plants.
Consulting and production company Amargo (Koprki, Poland) is now home to Mikrosam’s (Prilep, Macedonia) newest, floor-based, state-of-the-art filament production line for chemically resistant tanks or hydrogen storage in industrial plants. Using wet-impregnated fibers, this machine can produce composite tanks in a diameter range of 200-4,300 millimeters and a length range up to 12,000 millimeters with mandrel shafts.
Amargo covers many applications through concept, project, production, delivery and full service during the whole lifetime of the tank. In addition, the company has teamed up with two technical universities — Warsaw and Wroclaw — and is working on a 3-year project entitled “Development of an intelligent construction for a composite pressure vessel with a big hinged bottom,” that will enable the company to design and produce even complex tanks using the filament method winding process.
“Amargo has been supporting many industries for over 18 years by providing chemical-resistant tanks with complete installations and the necessary additional equipment and controls,” Szczepan Gorbacz, president of the management board of Amargo, says. “When the operating conditions of the tank, including the corrosive environment, temperature and pressure, are very demanding, solutions based on materials from the thermoplastic group, e.g.. polyethylene PE100 and polypropylene PP-H, are no longer sufficient. It is then necessary to use resin tank structures and glass fiber reinforcement, preferably with the use of continuous fiber.”
Amargo chose Mikrosam for its experience, expertise, engineering support, and flexibility in equipment design and integration.
Mikrosam’s system features a filament winding machine, an impregnating bath system for deep impregnation, a fiber creel, a fiber delivery system, software for programming and a quality inspection system. It has a single spindle, four axes of interpolation and a carriage floor-based configuration. Normally, the machine uses glass fiber, but it can be converted to carbon fiber, which the company says is important, especially for high-pressure tanks and hydrogen storage tanks. A fiber delivery system guides and transports fibers up to the resin bath and mandrels with minimal fiber damage. The ceramic eyelets minimize friction between the fibers as they are guided in a precise order until they reach the resin bath. Designed for high production speed, the deep immersion bath has 32 tows (fibers) for optimal impregnation quality.
The machine is also equipped with WindingExpert software, which can generate mandrels and patterns, simulate parts, produce parts and export FEA data (e.g., Nastran, Abaqus), among other features. For advanced control, the system offers a quality control system with SCADA integration. By using this manufacturing historian, the customer monitors and controls critical filament winding parameters. This includes precise tension control of the continuous fibers, accurate resin flow control and maintaining consistent winding angles. This ensures that Amargo can guarantee high-quality, well-balanced and reliable tanks.
Along with this new installation, Amargo and technical university engineers are working to prepare special detection systems — sensors that can measure elastic waves excited by piezoelectric transmitters, installed on the outer glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) layer of the tank. As aggressive chemical agents stored under elevated pressure can cause significant damage to both people and the environment, it is essential to develop systems for early damage detection and structural integrity monitoring of such vessels. These sensors also help to reduce maintenance costs and unforeseen operational breaks.
Additionally, as part of a complete solution, Amargo is incorporating the use of digital twin solutions.

Sicomin epoxy resins power construction of new zero-emission foiling passenger shuttle at Candela Boats
Sicomin announces its latest partnership with Candela, the renowned Swedish electric foiling boat manufacturer. Sicomin will supply a complete package of epoxy resins and adhesives for Candela’s latest ground-breaking project, the new P-12 foiling passenger shuttle.
Candela’s innovative approach to sustainable boating has generated massive international attention, and its latest vessel, the Candela P-12, is no exception. The new, zero emission, 12 metre passenger shuttle has been conceived to enable higher journey frequencies and increase utilization across urban water transit networks.
A full carbon fibre and epoxy construction results in a low vessel weight that allows Candela to provide operators with capacity for 30 passengers and a range of up to 60 nautical miles at 25 knots. Intended to replace larger, slower, fossil-fuelled ships, the P-12 uses 80% less energy than a conventional ferry whilst producing no local emissions and removing the risk of fuel or oil spillages.
The P-12 has been developed using the same lightweight, infused composite, foiling DNA for Candela’s earlier C-7 and C-8 leisure craft and is built using the same high-performance DNV-GL type approved Sicomin resins and adhesives as the previous models. Sicomin’s SR1710 epoxy infusion resin produces extremely high laminate mechanical properties and delivers excellent performance in hot and wet conditions, critical for such a lightweight foiling craft.
Sicomin’s premium epoxy adhesive, Isobond SR7200HTG is also used extensively in the P12 construction for bonding of the carbon fibre hull’s internal structure and final assembly of the vessel’s composite components. Suitable for both thick and thin bond lines, SR7200HTG provides superior bonding performance and is particularly resistant to micro-cracking in long term fatigue.
“Sicomin epoxies have helped us create the lightweight structures that give Candela vessels their game changing performance,” said Karl Fägersten, Chief Procurement Officer at Candela. “Thanks to this, we can provide fast and cost effective, more comfortable, zero emission journeys on our waterways.”
