Dagmawi, hey there.
'Hope you've been doing well, and that you still remember me π.
I have a request for you: I'd like you to broadcast an information that may be a good news for our Software folks. (You can skip to the TL;DR section below if you'd like.)
Last week on Sunday, I was trying to apply for the Student Pack of JetBrains, which allows you to use paid JetBrains products (such as CLion, WebStorm, PhpStorm, IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, etc.) for free. I used this link to do so:
https://www.jetbrains.com/community/education/#students
I tried to use my institutional email. However, they told me that the domain of that email β i.e., "aastustudent.edu.et" β wasn't recognized by them, and that they have a list of all approved domains in their GitHub account, which is this:
https://github.com/JetBrains/swot
If you go to this repository, you can see that the domains are all just text files, with the universities' names in them.
Then they told me that I could add the domain there by forking that repository, adding the text file with my university's name in it to my copy of the repository (at the appropriate directory), and make a pull request to the upstream one (theirs).
And so I did.
Five days letter (yesterday), they notified me that they've verified it and accepted my pull request. They've added the domain for our institutional email. You can go to the repository > lib > domains > et > edu, and you'll find "aastustudent.txt". That's the one I added.
And then I applied for a Student Pack using my institutional email. They sent an email (to my institutional email), and a link in it to finalize my request and open a JetBrains account. Then boom! I now have a Student Pack license valid for a whole year (up to April 25, 2025), and I can renew it when the time comes.
Here are the products I can use now:
β’ CLion
β’ DataGrip
β’ DataSpell
β’ dotCover
β’ dotMemory
β’ dotTrace
β’ GoLand
β’ IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate
β’ PhpStorm
β’ PyCharm
β’ ReSharper
β’ ReSharper C++
β’ Rider
β’ RubyMine
β’ WebStorm
(I don't know 90% of them π, but I'm sure they're great. They're JetBrains, after all.)
TL;DR
AASTU students can now apply for JetBrains' Student Pack, which allows us to download, install, and use paid JetBrains products for free. You'll only need your institutional email ("firstName.fathersName@aastustudent.edu.et". The default password is 12345678. Make sure to change that to a stronger password immediately). So, go to the following website and apply for it if you'd like:
https://www.jetbrains.com/community/education/#students
Thank you for reading. π
