'Riches in niches — go as narrow as possible.' I took it literally: a site only about left-handed kitchen tools. Hyper-specific, low competition, easy authority. Right?

Reality: the entire keyword universe was maybe 40 terms and 2,000 searches a month total. I capped out at 3k sessions and $35/mo by month 8. There was simply no ceiling to grow into.

I rebuilt it as a broader left-handed-living site — kitchen, desk, sports, kids. Same topical authority logic, but now hundreds of clusters existed. Eighteen months later: 28k sessions, $390/mo.

Niching down protects you early, but you can niche so far down there's no oxygen left to breathe.

Lesson banked: Narrow enough to win, wide enough to matter — that's the actual sweet spot.

Ch. 18: The AI Content Cliff

The 2023 hype said: spin up 500 AI articles, cash flows in. I did exactly that on a fresh personal-finance site. 480 unedited GPT posts, published in six weeks for under $200 in API costs.

It worked — for a while. Month 4: 40k sessions, $520/mo. I told myself I'd cracked it. Month 6: a core update vaporized 88% of it overnight. 40k to 5k. The site never recovered; I let the domain lapse.

The myth isn't 'AI content is banned' — it's that raw, unverified, undifferentiated AI content survives. Mine had zero firsthand testing, zero original data, identical structure on every page. It was the definition of unhelpful at scale.

On the next site I used AI for drafts but added real screenshots, my own numbers, an editor. Slower, durable.

Ch. 2: The Aged Domain I Overpaid For

"New sites are stuck in a sandbox — buy an aged domain." I shelled out $2,400 for a 14-year-old expired domain in the pet niche, sure I'd skip the wait.

The age did nothing useful. The domain had a dead backlink profile in a totally unrelated old topic (it used to be a plumbing company). Google treated my pet content as brand-new anyway, and the irrelevant old links may have confused things — I had weird ranking volatility for months.

A clean fresh domain I started the same week ranked faster and steadier. By month 9 the fresh one did $190/mo; the $2,400 'aged' one did $110/mo.

— There's no magic in age; there's value only in relevant, earned history
