Life in the modern world requires great effort on our part, and not just in worldly affairs and external movements. We are talking about the effort of the mind, of thought, of intellect. 'Conscious work': this is what was called in the monastic practice of the holy fathers, and such work must be done every minute, not only to prevent the world from being founded in indivisible chaos, to be able to distinguish the good from the bad, the precious from the not-so-precious, the accidental from the fatal, as the Platonists used to say, but also to do the work of filling the world with meaning, structuring it, designing and setting goals in it, maintaining proportions, not allowing entropy to turn everything into a homogeneous mess. We live in a totally damaged, fractured world, in a fractured civilisation, where all proportions are distorted. Its backbone is broken: the vertical, the notions of higher hierarchies. Mental tension is needed to restore the proportions of a hierarchical and intellectually structured world, whose ideal model is described by Plato and the Platonists.
