A person should not make up excuses for someone who does not want to accept an apology. Excuses often become lies.

Rarely have I seen someone apologize without mixing his apology with lies.

A secret is a trust and spreading it is treachery.

Being too relaxed with secrets is a weakness, and if someone hides something from his enemy, he does not necessarily need to reveal it to his friend.

Ibn Ḥibbān رحمـــه الله said:

The person who has a secret, as we previously described, should tighten his chest, but if he feels he must share his secret, he should do so by consulting someone who is religious, intelligent, and beloved,

and he should never seek advice from someone who does not possess these three characteristics.

If he is not religious, he will betray him;
if he is not intelligent, then he will make a mistake regarding the correct course;
and if he is not loved, then he may not give him sincere advice.

Whom does this hadith apply to?

The Prophet ﷺ said:
It is not lawful for a Muslim to avoid speaking with his brother beyond three days. [Bukhari]
An-Nawawi رحمـــه الله said:
This is if the boycotting is due to worldly affairs and personal reasons, but in terms of the people of Bid'ah (innovation), then the boycotting lasts until they repent.¹

Shaykh Abdul Qādir Jīlanī رحمـــه الله said: The believer ought not to emulate the heretical innovators [ahl al-bida'], nor should he give them any credit. He should not even salute them with the Islamic greeting.²

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمـــه الله said, "Keep away from the people of innovations, not to meet them with happy faces and not to greet them either."³

Ibn Ḥibbān رحمـــه الله said:

The Arabs used to call hastiness
"the mother of regret."

The hasty person
speaks before he knows,
responds before he is asked,
praises something before he tries it,
disparages after he praises,
is determined before he has considered,
and advances before he is determined.

Etiquette is a sign of excellent manners. Whoever learns etiquette in his youth will benefit from it in his maturity.

The people who learn etiquette and eloquence the most are the scholars.

The worst kind of wealth is that which a person does not use to satisfy his obligations.

The wise person shouldn't expect Allah's blessings to continue forever, so he delays performing his obligations with it (such as Hajj).

Extrapolate from this and apply it to every opportunity to do good while you have the means, such as helping the needy & spending in Allāh’s cause إن شـــــــاء الله.

The worst people are those who abandon their brothers in times of difficulty and need.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever alleviates a burden for his brother, Allah alleviates a burden on the Day of Judgment for him. [Muslim]

Whoever knew the reward for helping others would not hold back from helping in any way, even before being asked for help.

And that the best deeds are done before one is asked to do them.

Ibn Hibbān رحمـــه الله said:

The Arabs considered the pinnacle of generosity to be feeding others and honoring guests, and they didn't consider a person generous until he had walked a mile or two looking for a guest.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest. [Bukhari]

One of the ways to honor your guest is to join them in good conversation, welcome them with a smiling face, and serve them yourself.

A wise person should invite guests often and feed poor people because Allah's blessings are guarded and maintained by using those blessings for doing good, and if not, then they return from whence they came.

Anyone who is given a gift or shown kindness must show appreciation and give back better or the same as he received.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever is not grateful to the people, he is not grateful to Allah. [Abu Dawūd]

Those who are unable to give a gift in return should praise the person, because praise can stand in the place of appreciation for a good deed, and nobody is without need of praise and appreciation.

🎬 A Reflection on this Hadith

Concluding the book with a reminder on the ultimate truth–Death.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
Remember death–the killer of pleasures often. [Ahmad]

Ibn Hibbān رحمـــه الله said:

"Death is a cup that is passed around from person to person, and every single soul must eventually drink from it. The wise person doesn't forget something that he is waiting for.

The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter and the last stage of the dunya. Blessed is the one who prepared for themselves a comfortable grave throughout their life and sent forth good deeds for their Hereafter."

Imām Ibn Hibbān رحمـــه الله ends the book with the hope that:

"(It) will lead the reader to learn the behaviors and ways of the people of knowledge and wisdom.

Those who traverse the path of the people of knowledge will find success and affluence by simply contemplating and practicing their ways."

Tauheed

Shaykh Rabee' Al-Madkhali رحمـــه الله said, "Allah praised Luqman due to Him granting him the gift of wisdom.

Wisdom is to place things in their proper place. And from wisdom is to traverse upon the methodology of the Prophets by beginning with the most important matters first.

Allāh ﷻ said:
وإذ قال لقمان لابنه وهو يعظه يا بني لا تشرك بالله إن الشرك لظلم عظيم

And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him: "O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm (wrong) indeed. [31:13]

In a similar fashion Luqman called his son to the oneness of Allah (Tawheed) and prohibited him from (shirk) then after that he commanded him with the prayer and enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, this is proof of his wisdom."

The Shaykh rules,
'The Aqeedah and Tawheed, and purifying the minds and the society from shirk is the foundation and it is not permissible to begin with anything before it.'

Rights of Parents

Shaykh Rabee' رحمـــه الله said:
There are numerous verses where Allah تبــارك و تعــالى connects the rights of the parents to His rights.

Here the advice of Luqman to his son is mentioned and followed by His statement:¹

Allāh ﷻ said:

ووصينا الإنسان بوالديه حملته أمه وهنا على وهن وفصاله في عامين أن اشكر لي ولوالديك إلي المصير

And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination. [31:14]

Shaykh Abdur Razzāq Al-Badr حفظـــه الله reminds us:

Reflect oh child! Remember the time when your mother had to bear you, feed and nurture you. Remember how for nine months you did not let her rest even during her sleep. Remember how she had to experience excruciating pain to deliver you into this world. These hardships your mother went through should never be forgotten and should always be at the back of your mind.²

The Right of Allah ﷻ over Parents' rights.

Allāh ﷻ said:
وإن جاهداك على أن تشرك بي ما ليس لك به علم فلا تطعهما وصاحبهما في الدنيا معروفا

‎But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not; but behave with them in the world kindly. [31:15]

Shaykh Abdur Razzāq Al-Badr حفظـــه الله said, "If one's parents ask him to associate partners with Allah (ie. commit shirk) or to commit a sin, then they cannot be obeyed." ¹

The Prophet ﷺ said:
There's no obedience to the creation in disobedience to Allah. [Muslim]

Shaykh Rabee' رحمـــه الله said, "But you are not absolved from showing them kindness even if they strive against you and harm you in order to make you disbelieve in Allah ﷻ rather it is incumbent upon you to not forget their rights upon you."²
