Revive the Sunnah of Takbīr

Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illallāh,
Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar wa lillāhil-ḥamd.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“No person pronounces the talbiyah except that he is given glad tidings, and no person recites the takbīr except that he is given glad tidings.”

It was said: “Of Paradise?”

He ﷺ said: “Yes.”

The great day of 'Arafah:

Awza'ee رحمه الله said:

I realized that people were reserving things (their duas, needs, wishes) for the day of Arafah to ask Allāh for them.

And some of them used to say:

“For fifty years I have been supplicating on the day of Arafah and the year does not go by except that I see the answer of my dua come to pass as the morning light (as clear as day).”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of 'Arafah.
[Muslim]

Abū Qatādah narrated:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about fasting the Day of 'Arafah and he replied: It expiates [the sins of] the previous and coming year.

The best dua for 'Arafah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

The best Du'a is the Du'a on the Day of 'Arafah. And the best Du'a that I and the Prophets before me said is:

لا إله إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

La ilaha ill-Allah wahdahu lā sharīka lah Lahu'l-mulk wa lahu'l-hamd wa huwa 'alā kulli shay'in qadir

Translation:
There is no deity worthy of worship other than Allah, who is alone, having no partner. His is the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise. He is, of everything, All-Capable.

Make Dua

Ibn al-Mubarak رحمه الله said

I entered upon Sufyan at-Thawrī on the evening of 'Arafah while he was kneeling on his knees and his eyes shedding tears. He turned towards me, and I said to him:

Who is in the worst condition from amongst this gathering? He replied: The one who thinks that Allah will not forgive them.

Umar ibn al-Ward said that 'Ațaa' said to him:

إن استطعت أن تخلو بنفسك عشية عرفة فافعل

If you can be alone during the evening of 'Arafah, then do so.

Question 269: What is the Islamic hijab?

Response by Shaykh al Uthaymeen

The Islamic hijab is for the women to cover everything that is forbidden for her to expose. That is, she covers everything that she must cover.

The first of those bodily parts that she must cover is her face. It is the source of temptation and the source of people desiring her. Therefore, the woman must cover her face in front of those men that are not mahram.

As for those who claim that the Islamic hijab is to cover the head, shoulders, back, feet, shin and forearms while allowing her to uncover her face and hands, this is a very amazing claim. This is because it is well-known that the source of temptation and looking is the face.

How can one say that the Shariah does not allow the exposure of the foot of the woman while it allows her to uncover her face?

It is not possible that there could be in the Esteemed, Wise and Noble Shariah a contradiction. Yet everyone knows that the temptation from uncovering the face is much greater than the temptation that results from the uncovering of the feet. Everyone also knows that the most sought after aspect of the woman for men is the face.

If you told a prospective groom that a woman's face is ugly but her feet are beautiful, he would not propose to such a woman. However, if you told him that her face was beautiful but her hands, palms, or shins were less than beautiful, he would still propose to her. From this one can conclude that the face is the first thing that must be covered.

There are also evidences from the Book of Allah and the sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ . There are also statements from the Companions, the leading Imams and the great scholars of Islam that indicate that it is obligatory for the woman to cover all of her body in the presence of non-mahram men.
This obviously indicates that it is obligatory upon the woman to cover her face in front of such men. However, this is not the place to quote all those authorities. And Allah knows best.

Fasting on 'Āshura was Fardh before Ramadān

Ibn ʿAbbās [رضي الله عنه] said:

❝I never saw the Prophet [ﷺ] seeking to fast a day, giving it preference over another, except this day, the day of ʿĀshūrā, and this month, meaning the month of Ramaḍān.❞

[Sahīh Bukharī, (No. 2006)]

Narrated ‘Aishah [

❝Allāh's Messenger [ﷺ] ordered [the Muslims] to observe Saum [fast] on the day of ‘Ashura’, and when fasting in the month of Ramadān was prescribed, it became optional for one to observe Saum [fast] on that day [‘Ashura’] or not.❞

'Āshūra will not come back.

Muhammad ibn Shihab az Zuhri was traveling and still fasted on the Day of Ashura, so it was said to him,

“You fast on the Day of Ashura while traveling, but you break your fast in Ramadan?”

He replied, “Ramadan fasts can be made up on other days, but the Day of Ashura will pass you by (i.e., it is not legislated to make it up later).”
