In the time before the internet when us simpletons had to stand on the sidelines looking in at the physics world from a distance we had to simply trust that what we were being told was correct and that all the clever scientists had everything all under control. Now however we can all analyse exactly what went down in that period and we can all see for ourselves exactly who was telling the truth and who was getting away with murder.
The mathematics for the entirety of the theory were laid by Hendrik Lorentz and others long before Einstein ever came along, they were presented as perfectly natural consequences of movement through an all-pervading ‘ether’ and nothing whatsoever to do with any notions of a fabric of reality known as ‘space-time’. The only problem was that there was no experimental proof of the existence of such an ‘ether’, because of this there was a hole in the theory and it therefore remained ‘yet-to-be-accepted’ by the scientific community.
The maths all worked out but the mechanism underlying the theory remained elusive, Einstein simply decided to skip over this problem by postulating that the effects of relativity were in fact their own mechanisms! In one fell swoop then the very basic, core tenets of reality were removed from his interpretations and there stood a perfectly complete (if totally nonsensical) theory of relativity. Length contraction in his interpretation was no longer regarded as an artefact of ‘ordinary’ physics, but was itself just, sort of, something that happened, on its own, just like that, abracadabra 1, 2, 3 and all that. Similarly, time dilation was not due to the natural slowdown of the internal machinery of the atoms that make up all objects within our universe, but was instead due to the fabric of time slowing down for just that object, just like that, doesn’t need a mechanism, just does it, no problem, wallah!
