📚 IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 — Sample Answer for Band 6.5

❗️ Practicing with real tasks and model answers is one of the best ways to improve your writing.

Below is a typical Task 1 question and a sample response written at approximately Band 6.5 level.⬇️

〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰

🤎 Task 1: Pie Charts

🤎The charts below show how different age groups in one European country spent their leisure time online in 2000 and 2020.

🤎Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰

🖍️ Band 6.5 Sample Answer:

1️⃣ The two pie charts compare how people of different ages used the internet for leisure in a European country in 2000 and 2020.

2️⃣ Overall, the data shows a significant increase in internet usage among older age groups, while younger people showed a decline. In both years, the 18–25 age group had the highest percentage, although it dropped over time.

3️⃣ In 2000, the majority of users were aged 18 to 25, making up 45% of internet leisure activity. The 26–35 group followed with 25%, while the over-50s represented just 5%.

4️⃣ By 2020, the pattern had changed. The 36–50 age group increased to 30%, and the over-50s rose dramatically to 20%. Meanwhile, usage among 18–25s fell to 30%. The 26–35 group remained stable at 25%.

5️⃣ In conclusion, younger users still dominate leisure internet usage, but older groups have become much more active online over the past two decades.

🆕🆕IELTS Writing Task 1 Band 6.5 — Full Breakdown by Criteria

🖇Let’s take a closer look at why the sample answer above would likely receive a Band 6.5 in the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 section.

Here’s a breakdown based on the four official criteria ⬇️

〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰

1️⃣ Task Achievement – Band 6.5
✅The candidate covers all key information from the chart and provides a clear overview.
✖️However, some details are too general (e.g., “the pattern had changed” is vague), and a few specific figures could be better explained.

📌 There is a clear summary and comparisons, but more precise data description would improve the score.

2️⃣ Coherence and Cohesion – Band 7.0
✅The answer is logically organised, and ideas flow well from one paragraph to another.
✅ Linking devices such as “Overall,” “meanwhile,” “in conclusion” are used appropriately.
✖️ Some sentence structures are repetitive. Greater variety in transitions would help.

3️⃣ Lexical Resource – Band 6.5
✅ The vocabulary is generally appropriate and includes topic-related terms (“leisure activity,” “dramatically,” “stable”).
✖️ There’s limited use of more advanced or precise vocabulary. For example, “usage” is repeated instead of using synonyms like “engagement” or “participation.”
✖️ Some word choices are slightly awkward or simplistic.

4️⃣ Grammatical Range and Accuracy – Band 6.0
✅ A mix of sentence types is attempted (e.g., comparatives, time references).
✖️ There are noticeable errors in article usage, verb agreement, and plural forms.
✖️ Some structures are too simple or repeated often.

📌 More complex and accurate grammar is needed for Band 7.

〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰

🖇 Overall Band: 6.5

💋💋💋 To reach Band 7.0+, focus on using more precise vocabulary, avoid repetition, and work on grammatical accuracy with complex structures.

⚪️Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️✉️

🔗 Band 5.0 Sample Answer:

1️⃣ This graph shows how many people take bus, train and tram in the city from 2010 to 2020. Bus is most popular in 2010 but then go down. Tram is going up all time. Train is also going up but not fast like tram. In 2020 tram is more than train and bus.

2️⃣ The graph show that people use less bus and more tram in 2020. So transport change in this time. Bus is not good maybe or people like tram more now. The line go down for bus and up for others.

❓ Why Band 5.0? Breakdown by 4 IELTS Criteria ⤵️

1️⃣ Task Achievement – Band 5.0
❌ Only a basic overview is provided.
❌ Many important details are missing (e.g., no numbers or specific years are mentioned).
✔️ The student attempts to describe trends but lacks accuracy and detail.
❌ No clear summary or full comparison of all data.

2️⃣ Coherence and Cohesion – Band 5.0
❌ The ideas are loosely connected and lack logical flow.
✔️ Paragraphing is used, but cohesion is weak due to repetitive sentence structures.
❌ Linkers like “so,” “maybe,” “but” are too informal or poorly used.

3️⃣ Lexical Resource – Band 5.0
❌ Vocabulary is very limited and often repetitive (“go up,” “go down,” “more,” “less”).
❌ No use of topic-specific or academic words like “fluctuate,” “decline,” “rise steadily.”
✔️ Some basic vocabulary is correct but too simple for an academic task.

4️⃣ Grammatical Range and Accuracy – Band 5.0
❌ Frequent grammar errors throughout (e.g., “bus is,” “go down,” “tram is more”).
❌ Very few complex sentences.
✔️ Some ideas are understandable, but the errors reduce clarity.

〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️

📚 Overall Band: 5.0

🔔 To improve: Practice describing data using accurate figures and dates, expand your vocabulary for describing trends, and work on grammar accuracy with varied sentence structures.

🍦🐘🦙🧑‍🏫🌞 General Writing Task 1 — Sample Answer (Band 7.0) + Highlighted Language

🔖 Practicing real IELTS letters helps you understand tone, structure, and grammar expectations.

Below is a Band 7.0 response to a typical General Training Writing Task 1 prompt. ⬇️

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

📌 Task 1: Semi-Formal Letter
You ordered a book online, but it arrived damaged. Write a letter to the online store.

In your letter:
➡️ explain the situation
➡️ request a replacement or refund
➡️ suggest how to prevent this in the future

Write at least 150 words.

📎Begin your letter as follows: ❄️Dear Customer Service,❄️

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

📲 Band 7.0 Sample Answer:

1⃣Dear Customer Service,

2⃣I recently ordered a copy of Modern Business Strategies from your website (Order #49823), and it was delivered to my address last Thursday. However, I was disappointed to find that the book was damaged when I opened the package. The front cover was bent, and several pages were torn, which makes it difficult to read.

3⃣I would like to request a full refund or a replacement copy, as the item I received is not in acceptable condition. I’m happy to return the damaged book if necessary.

4⃣To avoid this issue in the future, I suggest using sturdier packaging materials, such as bubble wrap or cardboard inserts. It seems the book was placed in a thin envelope, which likely caused the damage during shipping.

5⃣Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your prompt response and hope the issue can be resolved soon.

6⃣Yours faithfully,
Alex Morgan

📝 IELTS General Writing Task 1 — Real Band Breakdown (Sample: Complaint Letter)

❓ Want to know how IELTS examiners really evaluate your letter?

▶️ Here’s a realistic band breakdown of the sample we posted earlier — with different scores for each criterion, just like in the actual exam.

📌 Task:
Write a letter to an online store to complain about a damaged book, request a refund or replacement, and suggest a solution.

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖

1️⃣ Task Achievement – 7.0

✔️ All three bullet points are addressed.
✔️ The purpose of the letter is clear and appropriately developed.
❗️ However, the explanation of the situation could include more specific detail to fully satisfy the task.

💬 Improvement tip: Expand on the emotional impact or the urgency of the issue.

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖

2️⃣ Coherence and Cohesion – 6.5

✔️ The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing.
❗️ However, linking phrases are quite basic (“however,” “to avoid this issue”). There’s some repetition and limited use of referencing.

💬 Improvement tip: Use more varied connectors like “as a result,” “due to this issue,” “in response” for smoother flow.

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖

3️⃣ Lexical Resource – 7.5

✔️ A wide range of topic-specific vocabulary: “refund,” “replacement,” “packaging materials,” “torn pages.”
✔️ Word choice is mostly accurate and appropriate.

💬 Improvement tip: Use slightly more idiomatic or nuanced phrases to boost your score (e.g., “in good faith,” “not fit for purpose”).

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖

4️⃣ Grammatical Range and Accuracy – 7.0

✔️ Good use of modals, conditionals, and passive voice: “I would like to request,” “was delivered,” “if necessary.”
❗️ Occasional minor errors and a few overly simple structures.

💬 Improvement tip: Add more variety in sentence types and ensure all complex structures are accurate.

💯 Overall Band Score: 7.0

This is a solid letter with a few areas to polish. With slightly richer ideas, better cohesion, and more complex structures, it could reach Band 8.0.
