The line graph illustrates changes in the frequency with which Australian teenagers consumed three types of fast foodβpizza, hamburgers, and fish and chipsβbetween 1975 and 2000.
Overall, the consumption of hamburgers and pizza increased substantially over the period, whereas the figure for fish and chips followed the opposite trend. Notably, fish and chips were the most popular choice at the beginning of the period, but hamburgers became the most frequently consumed item by 2000.
In 1975, Australian teenagers ate fish and chips approximately 100 times per year, compared with only around 20 occasions for both pizza and hamburgers. The consumption of fish and chips then declined slightly to about 85 times in 1980, before recovering to roughly 95 in 1985. After that, however, it fell steadily and reached approximately 40 times per year by 2000.
By contrast, hamburger consumption rose consistently throughout the period. Starting at around 10β15 times annually in 1975, the figure increased gradually during the following decade and then climbed much more sharply, reaching about 100 occasions by 1995 and approximately 110 by 2000. Pizza consumption also increased, although at a less dramatic rate. From roughly 5 occasions per year in 1975, it rose steadily to around 85 by 1995, after which it remained relatively stable.
