In July of 1944, a Marine inspects an improvised Japanese spear on Saipan consisting of a stick with a bayonet attached. 🪖

82 years ago today, on a mission to strike rail yards in Budapest, B-17 “Mizpah” of the 483rd Bomb Group took a devastating direct flak hit to the nose. 💥

The explosion killed Lt. Kenneth Dudley & navigator Lt. Joseph Henderson instantly & tore away much of the front of the aircraft. ✈️

Despite the chaos, pilot Lt. Ewald Swanson kept the Fortress level long enough for the surviving crew to bail out. 🪂

They became POWs & endured months of harsh captivity before liberation in 1945. 🇺🇸

In July of 1944, Pfc. Alfonso Ortega of the 607th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company paints white crosses that would be used in the first American Military Cemetery at Vierville-Sur-Mer in Normandy.🪦

Ortega & the 607th arrived in England in March of 1944. Less than a month later, tragedy struck. 🪖

During Operation Tiger, one of the rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the 607th lost 16 men during the tragic German E-boat attack that occurred. ⚓️

Following their work in Normandy, Ortega & his unit moved deeper into the European theater & went on to serve through major operations, including the Battle of the Bulge. 🌨️

The company was awarded the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque for their critical & solemn duties under extreme combat conditions. 🎖️

Ortega survived the war & was discharged by the army, returning home safely to the US after the conclusion of World War II. 🇺🇸

in Normandy, France. 🪖

In 1945, 1st Sgt Louis Cobb, Tech Sgt Michael Duda & 1st Sgt Joseph Gravino of the 9th Infantry Division before furlough. 🪖

These men met at Fort Bragg before fighting in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Hurtgen Forest, and finally the beginning of the Bulge. 🇺🇸
