On this day in 1799, the frigate USS Constellation defeats the French warship L'Insurgente off Nevis. It's the first battle of America's undeclared (and largely forgotten) "Quasi War" against its former ally France.

Today in 1943, the United States successfully drives the Japanese from Guadalcanal after 186-days of fighting. 7,000 American troops have been killed in the campaign; Japan's losses are 19,000. Although costly, the victory turns the tide of the Pacific War in the Allies' favour.

⚔️ The bronze Greek sculptures known as the Riace Bronzes or the Riace Warriors, c. 460-450 BCE.

The statues were rescued from the Ionian Sea near Riace Marina, Italy in 1972 CE. The bronze figures are around 2 metres tall.

The Aztecs trace their origins to the 12th century, when they began settling in the Valley of #Mexico among other competing city-states. By the 15th century, their empire had grown into the most powerful polity in Mesoamerica, rivaled only by the #Inca Empire in South #America.
