6.1 EARTHQUAKE NEAR HAWAII - NO TSUNAMI EXPECTED
An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck near Naalehu, Hawaii on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was at a depth of 17.1 km and was about 29 km south of Naalehu, the USGS said.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the earthquake.

MIT Wants to Replace Lights With Glowing Plants

In December of 2017, researchers at MIT announced they had found a way to create light-emitting plants. They achieved this by embedding specialized nanoparticles into the leaves of watercress plants that allowed them to give off a very dim light for nearly four hours.

At the time, they hoped that with further optimization, these plants could one day be bright enough to illuminate a home or office workspace. That day has come.

Massive Class of Chemicals Causing More Cancer Than Previously Thought, Study Shows - Around the world, regulators have long relied on one compound to assess a community’s lung cancer risk from a class of chemicals that we’re exposed to while grilling burgers, waiting in traffic, and breathing in wood smoke from a fire.
That compound — benzo(a)pyrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) — however, only accounts for 11% of lung cancer risk associated with PAHs, MIT researchers found in a study published early September in GeoHealth.
Meanwhile, 17% of the PAH-linked cancer risk in the study came from the largely unregulated and under-studied breakdown products.
People can be exposed to PAHs in a variety of ways, from smoking to eating grilled food to breathing in tailpipe or wildfire emissions. Strong and shallow M6.5 earthquake hits Alaska Peninsula, U.S. - A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit the Alaska Peninsula, U.S. at 09:10 UTC on October 11, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 46.3 km (28.7 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.8 at a depth of 51 km (31 miles).

Bitcoin rises as SEC approves crypto equity ETFs and US says it won’t ban BTC

Headlines in the cryptocurrency space this week were heavily influenced by Bitcoin’s price rise, which first started on rumours the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would approve an exchange-traded fund (ETF) tracking the price of Bitcoin through futures contracts.

Instead, the SEC approved an ETF that provides investors with exposure to BTC through a portfolio of companies with significant exposure to the cryptocurrency. The ETF – called the “Volt Bitcoin Revolution ETF” – filed its initial application in June.

Volt Equity, the firm managing the fund, said a significant portion of its assets would be made up of MicroStrategy shares, which has more than $6 billion in BTC on its balance sheet. The ETF consists of approximately 30 companies, including Tesla, Square, Coinbase, PayPal, and Twitter.
