Record-breaking bomb cyclone engulfs Alaska and northern Pacific Ocean with winds topping 100 mph and 45-foot waves
On Thursday morning, the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center confirmed that the storm is already generating 110 mph winds. On satellite imagery, the storm appears as a giant comma shape swirl of clouds, a textbook appearance for a strong non-tropical weather system. The European model predicts the storm’s pressure to bottom out at 919.9 millibars around 9 or 10 a.m. Eastern time Thursday. The two northern Pacific cyclones that set records in 2014 and 2015 saw their pressures level off at around 924 millibars.

For the second time this month, U.S. warships on Thursday sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait, prompting China to denounce the "provocative actions." The United States said guided-missile destroyers USS John S. McCain and USS Curtis Wilbur conducted a routine transit through the strait between eastern Nationalist China and the democratically run island of Taiwan that China views as a rouge province.
"The ship's transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific," the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement. "The United States military will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows."

The Air Force Has Big Plans for Its Flying Car in 2021
The U.S. Air Force is planning to put its futuristic flying car through a series of tests next year that will help determine how the service can use the vehicle, at home or deployed.
The Air Force Research Lab's AFWERX innovation program announced the service's Agility Prime has cleared several regulations that moves planning forward for its "organic resupply bus," or ORB. The flying car, the S4 made by aerospace company Joby Aviation, passed a Technical Airworthiness Authority (TAA) evaluation, the initial step that enables the unusual aircraft "to fly under Air Force contract in early 2021," the service said in a December release.

France to deploy 100,000 police on New Year's Eve to impose 8pm curfew
France is set to deploy 100,000 police and gendarmes across the country on December 31 to help ensure that the nation's 8 pm curfew is observed on what is traditionally a party night. According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the law enforcement officers will also be on the streets on December 31 to ensure security because of France's high terror threat.
He said there would be a visible police presence in city centres and flashpoint suburbs from the start of the curfew at 8 pm.

The AP reports of the sensitive timing, "The decision, announced Thursday by the acting secretary of defense, Christopher Miller, came one day after Air Force B-52 bombers flew nonstop from the United States to the Persian Gulf in a show of force that military officials said was intended to caution Iran against carrying out attacks against U.S. forces or interests."
The Mideast and Gulf region constitute the USS Nimitz's normal area of operation over much of the past year. It's now being sent "home" to its US West coast base.

POLAR SILK ROAD: DECONSTRUCTING CHINESE AMBITIONS IN THE NORTH
The polar Silk Road is an extension of China’s broader Belt and Road initiative. It is a $1 trillion investment in global infrastructure. We have seen considerable Chinese infrastructure investments and resource investments in the Russian Arctic—Russian natural gas, oil developments, infrastructure to support shipping through the Northern Sea Route, to China.
The challenge comes from China, or by extension, a state-owned company which might gain effective control over a region of the Canadian North through economic investment. A state-owned company that builds several mines in the Canadian Arctic will effectively control the economy of a big part of a sub-region. Because there’s little economic activity generally in the North, a big mine has a huge footprint with respect to jobs and regional economic activity. A Chinese state-owned company that owns several mines within a region of the Arctic has a great deal of control and leverage.

“The U.S. has evidence that the PRC [People’s Republic of China] attempted to finance attacks on American servicemen by Afghan non-state actors by offering financial incentives or ‘bounties'” and said the National Security Council “is coordinating a whole-of-government investigation.”
A senior official told Axios that “Like all first reports, we react with caution to initial reports” but “any intel reports relating to the safety of our forces we take very seriously.”
The sources also did not disclose if the ‘non state actors’ referred to in the intel were members of the Taliban or not.
