Senate passes stimulus bill, sends to Trump for signature

The Senate on Monday night approved a $2.3 trillion COVID-19 relief bill and sent it to President Trump for his signature.

The legislation — which follows passage in the House — authorizes $600 stimulus checks for people who earn less than $75,000 per year and an extra $600 payment per child. The bill contains a weekly unemployment insurance supplement of $300 and also has $284.4 billion in Paycheck Protection Program forgivable loans for small businesses.

It allocates $82 billion for schools and colleges, $40 billion for vaccine distribution and virus testing, $25 billion in rental assistance and $15 billion for live entertainment venues.

It also creates new penalties for violating copyright laws with unauthorized online streaming.

Strong eruption at Russian Sheveluch Volcano, ash up to 8.5 km (28 000 feet)

A strong eruption took place at Sheveluch volcano, Kamchatka, Russia at 00:35 UTC on December 22, 2020, with volcanic ash rising up to 8.5 km (28 000 feet) above sea level.

As a result, KVERT raised the Aviation Color Code to Red at 01:22 UTC.

According to visual data from Ust-Kamchatsk, explosions sent ash up to 8 km (25 240 feet) a.s.l. and an ash plume extended to the northeast of the volcano to a distance of 42 km (26 miles).

Satellite data showed an ash cloud is drifting about 130 km (81 miles) to the east of the volcano, KVERT said at 02:55 UTC, and lowered the Aviation Color Code back to Orange.

The extrusive eruption of the volcano continues.
