While AI techniques are already being used to make “deepfake” videos depicting events that never occurred, the new algorithm has the potential to discreetly change real photographs to affect the viewer’s perspective on their subjects.
“With the technology, it is possible to take a photo and create a modified version designed to give off a certain impression,” cognitive scientist and AI researcher Jordan W. Suchow of the Stevens Institute of Technology and co-author of the study said.
“For obvious reasons, we need to be careful about how this technology is used.”
Therefore, to protect its technology, the study team obtained a patent and is currently launching a firm to licence the algorithm for pre-approved ethical objectives.

The Anak Krakatoa Volcano Has Erupted In Indonesia, Sending Massive Ash Towers Into The Sky
The Anak Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia has erupted, shooting volcanic ash clouds into the sky and prompting authorities to advise locals to wear masks outside.
The Sunday explosion resulted in ash rising up to 3,000 metres into the sky, according to reports.
“We are still recording continuous eruptions with thick clouds towering between 500 to 3,000 metres from the peak,” Deny Mardiono of Indonesia’s Geological Agency stated.
“People, including tourists,” he continued, “should obey the Geological Agency’s recommendation, which prohibits anyone being within a two-kilometre radius of the crater.”
Anak Krakatoa, which translates to “Child of Krakatoa,” has exploded 21 times in recent weeks, but officials claimed Sunday’s eruption was the greatest ever recorded.

In 2019, Musk had said that Neuralink was developing a “sewing machine-like” device that would provide a direct connection between a computer and a chip inserted inside the brain.
Mr. Musk hinted that Neuralink’s chip will be able to cure depression and addiction by “retraining” the parts of the brain responsible for these afflictions.
The Tesla CEO noted that those who are willing to get Neuralink chip into their brains would go through a process similar to laser eye surgery.

Ukrainian Refugees Find Comfort in Italy From Unlikely Source – A Bunch of Lawyers
Ukrainians fleeing across the border to Poland have found an unlikely yet devoted group of supporters in the form of a north Italian law practice.
It’s not a characteristic that one immediately associates with lawyers—free labor—but whether it’s driving through the night to personally bring people to temporary homes or volunteering to legally-represent refugees needing integration into society, Studio Legale in the city of Varese is a credit to the profession.
Boni had witnessed a refugee camp from the Lebanon War in the 1980s, but that was the extent of his experience with relief efforts.
“I remember the human tragedy,” he said. “I never thought I would do something of the sort, to go into a refugee camp for people escaping from war.”
“I tried to put myself in their position. I thought, ‘What would I want if it were my family?’” he said.

There’s an excellent chance to watch a meteor shower in the pre-dawn hours next week.
From May 4th, 5th, and 6th, at a few hours past midnight in the Northern Hemisphere, go outside in a dark area away from artificial lights and look to the south. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower could reveal as many as 20-30 meteors per hour.
In the Southern Hemisphere, look essentially straight up, and you should be able to see about forty meteors per hour. In fact, Earthsky say it’s the best shower to see south of the Equator.
