James Joyce was aghast at how xenophobic Michael Cusack (founder member of GAA) and the early GAA organisers were to Protestants in 1900s. The GAA use to have Rule 27 that banned members of the GAA from playing or watching other sports such as rugby, football or hockey - in order to promote National pastimes/sports.

Douglas Hyde, then President of Ireland and a patron of the GAA, attended an association football match at Dalymount Park between Ireland and Poland with the Taoiseach, Éamon de Valera. As a result he was removed from his patronage and banned from the GAA. This was despite Hyde being a founder of the Gaelic League and staunch supporter of the GAA. The GAA did not accept the principle that the President should be allowed to attend any foreign sporting event until 1945.

It wasn't until television in the 1960s did this Rule start to break as mass media and sports abroad flooded the country and was finally abolished at the GAA's annual congress in Belfast in 1971.
