For lawyers, the spuriousness of Magna Carta Hiberniae is rather awkward. The ongoing Statute Law Revision Programme has purged from Irelandโs statute book many redundant statutes, but the 2007 Act specifically names Magna Carta Hiberniae as a retained statute. Our enterprising and anonymous ex-chequer clerk could scarcely have imagined that his new and improved Magna Carta would still be the โlaw of the landโ 700 years after he started tinkering with the text!
