Torture and Decapitation in Sligo
Living in Sligo is generally a pleasure, deep and rich culture of the arts, breath-taking landscapes in every direction and the people here are the salt of the earth. Sligo is no stranger to knife crime, gun crime and some vicious murders and rapes to date but what happened very recently has shaken the community to the core. Monday evening we all began hearing of a body found in sleepy Cartron heights, then the name emerged Aiden Moffit, I knew Aiden as a friend once shared an apartment with him years back. Moffit as we knew him was a nice, courteous and very clearly homosexual man. Telegram groups were rife with wild theories about what happened, my mind cast back to a murder some years ago in cartron where a man stabbed a gay man to death, the killer called to the house where the victim and a well known local alcoholic were drinking. The killer became aware that there was a sexual relationship between the victim and the alcoholic, he was upset because he knew that the alcoholic was a vulnerable adult and he lost his temper and fatally stabbed the victim. The killers only act of mitigation was rushing the victim to the emergency room to try and save him where he sadly passed. I presumed it must have been something similar until the gruesome nature of Moffits death emerged, he had been decapitated and had his genitals removed and as rumour had it sustained these and other mutilations over a prolonged period. At this point we knew we were dealing with something totally different, what in heaven or earth could poor Moffit have done to cause someone to do something so vile and heinous to him. The following evening the motive began to become clearer, we heard the police had found another body, partially decapitated in a house in the town, Michael Snee was a lovely individual I had met him a couple of times and he too was gay. The killer was targeting gay people and media informed us there was speculation he was finding his victims from a gay hook up app, another incident became connected. The killer had met his victim by a graveyard, possibly from the same app and stabbed him in the eye, Anthony lost his eye that night but very luckily fought and escaped with his life.
Teams of armed gardai raided multiple properties on the night of Tuesday the 12th April and successfully arrested a 22 year old man named Yousef Palani accused of all 3 incidents. Yousefs family are Kurdish/Iranian refugees, they are known in the community as being generally very friendly, Yousef was schooled in Ireland and rumour has it he was part of his peer group until he recently travelled to his home country for a period, the conjecture is that this is where he became ‘radicalized’. A local man from Pakistan whom I often speak with informed me that Yousef had visited his premises once and became enraged when he saw that there was alcohol present, alcohol being ‘Haram’ or forbidden in Islam. The picture becoming clear here is that this youth was motivated by eternal reward to carry out these acts, the only clear and obvious motive is Islamic extremism. Gay people being tortured and executed is an everyday occurrence in many modern day Islamic cultures and in places mandated by law along with some other uncomfortable truths like honour killings and arranged marriages, these aren’t pleasant points to discuss and it’s easier to ignore but it is high time we describe things as truthfully and honestly as possible if we are out to survive and be able to process these horrors as a society.
Problem we face here in Ireland is that we have been so heavily programmed by the media to think that Islamic Extremism is never a concern and should not enter to the discussion when forming immigration policies or approach to refugee crisis’s. The media are refusing to acknowledge the obvious motive and speaking about hate crime, homophobia and talking about laws to tackle hate speech and hate crime.
