IT’S JUST FOR “DEFENSE”: NATO sends tens of thousands of troops to conduct drills at Russia’s northern border

NATO drills dubbed “Cold Response” involving 30,000 troops, 220 aircraft, and 50 warships are set to start this week in Norway.

The NATO brass insists that the drills, which include Russia’s closest northern neighbors - Finland and Sweden - are a “defensive exercise” and are not a military operation “with an offensive purpose”.

It is not clear how another military build-up of alliance forces on Russia’s northern doorstep is going to help ease the ongoing tensions.
