Around 3,000 Potentially Harmful Chemicals Discovered in Food Packaging

Little is known about many of the 3,240 chemicals found in food packaging, processing equipment and tableware or about their effects on people, according to a scientific report released this week.

Manufacturers are either intentionally or unintentionally adding these chemicals to packaging, and the mix is “just too complicated to allow us to regulate them safely”, the authors of the study said.

Earlier studies also found dangerous “forever chemicals” in pizza packaging that pose cancer and infertility risks to consumers.
