The Winter Solstice - First Bit
The Winter Solstice in Celtic folk ways, as with other folk ways, is a celebration of the start of the light half of the year, which marks the end of the dark half of the year. Even though many have tried to uproot this celebration over the years, nothing has stopped it from being celebrated somewhere in Europe and nothing will change this.
In Gaelic tradition, there is a figure known as the Cailleach and she is seen as an ancestor and has strong ties to things such as the weather and winter. She is seen as an evil figure by some since she is so destructive, but to make something new, there are times where you have to destroy something. Her name means "old woman" or "hag" and she is known to have been in Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man.
