"Turbary is the ancient right to cut turf, or peat, for fuel on a particular area of bog. Most harvesters don’t own the plot of bog land they work; they have turbary rights, allowing them to cut turf on land others own, much like mineral rights."

Start looking for your plot.

It's the luck of the draw if the land owner where your plot of bog is easy dealt with. Most bog is part of working farms, and if a farmer has had a problem with people leaving gates open, leaving rubbish behind, or scaring animals, you'll probably be held to a higher standard of care than others would be.

Sometimes you get lucky and the land owner(s, in case of commanage) doesn't currently farm the land, so there's no gates to accidentally leave open, no fences to damage and no animals to be mindful of.

If you live in a house more than a century old, check the Deeds, your plot of bog will be marked on it. If your house is less than a century old, try and find out if you can get a glimpse of your parents/grandparents/great grand uncle three times removed house deeds.

Most plots of bog are abandoned these days, but if you just start cutting turf without some proof of a claim to it, you're pretty much stealing and the landowner can give you a lot of hassle at the drop of a hat
